Why would you move to LA from Texas? Cost of Living is more than double, property values are higher, traffic is worse.

I did it last year. Weather is massively better, traffic is actually better in Orange County than Austin, and even West LA is rarely any worse, sushi is obviously just a bit better, produce is much better and it's easy to find locally grown stuff, canyon roads are much more entertaining than hill country roads, there's an ocean too, and I don't have or need a/c, the list goes on. But yeah, housing prices do suck, as does the 9.3% state income tax.

We've been out here in Laguna Beach for a year, but miss big city life, so will probably be moving up towards Santa Monica before too long. Depending on your work and budget, look at Santa Monica, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, or Paso Robles. When moving from Texas, I figured I might as well see the beach for a while. No point in coming west and stopping before you get all the way there.

I was just in Paso Robles last weekend. That is a really nice area, but it's kind of cut off from the big metro areas.

Check out Irvine. It's a well-kept, friendly and safe town with lots of open roads to stretch your engine's muscles. And if you want to go into the city, it takes only an hour. There are tons of people throughout Bimmerpost who reside in Irvine; I'm sure you can get lots of different impressions on living there.

HA! That's South Central.

And dunno about the Valley. It's VERY hot, far and boring. I suggest Brentwood, West LA, Santa Monica, South Bay (Manhattan, Redondo, etc.), Westwood, Century City, Marina Del Rey and Hancock Park. West of the 405 is very nice and it's close to the beach. Some areas in Venice are nice but a lot are sketcy.

If you can afford it, Hollywood Hills, Bel Air and Beverly Hills.

Here's a good map:
http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap2.htm

What's your budget? LA has become very expensive to live now.

The Torrance/Palos Verdes area was nice when I lived there about 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure PV still is, not sure about Torrance.

Seriouscatly, where you live in LA should largely depend on where you work. Get a job before you commit to buying or leasing a place otherwise you may end up with a commute that will make you want to kill yourself.

Before I settled down I tried a few places: Marina del Rey, Malibu, then West Hollywood for a year, now Valencia for a year. I like Valencia a lot because it's quiet and there's no traffic and not a lot of dumb bullshit going on. It only takes me 30 minutes to get to Santa Monica or Hollywood. I now have a place on the edge of a large park, with a community pool, a 1 car garage AND a carport, new hardwoods, central air, washer/dryer, dishwasher, two patios for a little more than half of what I paid for a comparative shithole in West LA.

West Hollywood was fun to live in for a while, but it got old. The parking sucks, the roads are brutal on your car, there's a lot of petty crime, you have to deal with endless dumbfuck tourists clogging up the roads on the weekends, and housing is overpriced. In West LA (from Santa Monica to West Hollywood) you need to be ready to pay $4,000 or more a month in rent to have a house that would cost you $1,000 - $1,800 a month in most parts of Texas.
