I am excited for the possibilities this could open up. Though I will get a lot more excited when commercial viability is achieved

You don't get it. They've been claiming these kinds of numbers all along, .7. ,9, breaking 1.0...for years. YEARS. But it's because they aren't using Q-total. If you read any of the articles on this latest achievement, it's the beam energy. There are several reputable scientists and physicists with the correct story on this, but it doesn't make the media headlines. Beam energy is not what it takes to power the laser, it's just what comes out one end. The bright end. They are totally ignoring what goes in the other end of that laser, in terms of energy.

If you seriously believe that the fusion energy exceeded Q-total input, I don't know what to tell you. It's just wrong.

I get what she is saying, but it seems like you are denying the actual breakthrough that occurred ...they have been trying to do this since the 1960's but never achieved what they did recently...they wouldn't have made all this news about it had they actually been doing for years like you say.

here is a better video of what was achieved and it is a breakthrough and it will obviously take years to perfect, but it finally showed it can be done...although it isn't there yet, I won't be surprised if it is achieved

Well still not really, they've been doing it in bombs since the late 40s/early 50s.

In a controlled environment, ok, but it's more of a necessary step, a goal for this project, hopefully one that they can recreate and learn from, but as a "breakthrough" it's being highly misrepresented by media and other sources.

Very interesting, but my take away is that this is decades if not centuries away from being viable on a scale that is useful.

For the record, I get your point. They took 2 MJ of ultraviolet light to make 3MJ of energy. Problem is it takes much more than 2MJ to make that much ultraviolet light. Just the same way it takes ~100 watts of energy to make 10 watts of visible light with an incandescent light bulb. So now we use LED's do do that same 10 watts of visible light with ~20 watts of energy.
