My Bro just got a '10 GTi w/ nav .. car is fantastic for the money, aside from the fwd which bugs my ass.

Interior is top notch and beyond a car in it's price range. Seats/steering wheel, Bluetooth, ipod, SD slot and some other goodies make it entertaining.

All that aside, comparing it to a 335i especially with mods.. well, there is no comparison.

Keep your car. You're going to regret it.

Ever thought about the Lancer Ralliart, either sedan or sportback?

Mine is an 02' Type S. Picked it up for $3K. I put $25 in the tank and go for the whole week during the winter which is what I use it for. Winter beater. In the summer I roll around a 09' Honda Ruckus. $5.00 in the tank and I get over 100+ miles.

Or a E39 M5. You'd forget about that 335 real quick! In fact, I'd much rather have the M5 anyway...and mint ones can be found for reasonable money.

My M3 is my beater...(even though it's like brand new)

02 WRX. It's AWD and one of the best bang for buck cars IMO. As much as I like the M cars people are suggesting, I'd think about the maintainance that would come along with it.

Some other choices I think are worthy of consideration:

RSX-S
IS300 (older gen)
Civic SI
Mazdaspeed3 (not sure about the reliability)
Mini Cooper S
G35 (I'd look into the sedans, you can probably find one cheap)
350Z HR
VW R32 (not sure if this is beyond your budget)

OP, what is your budget anyways? And requirements? Judging from your reaction to Z4M, you don't care about seating space.

Older models of a Honda Accord/Civic, or a Toyote Camry/Corrola. An M3 would be evereything but a beater to me lol.
