College Honors Question

This might differ between schools but I've searched everywhere on my school's website and haven't found an answer.

In order to get cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude do you need the exact gpa or do they round up?

For example if you have a 3.48, do you graduate cum laude or do you need a 3.50?

That GPA is weak nonetheless. I'm so helpful.

They do not round up. A 3.4999 will still be counted as a 3.49.

A bunch of BS in my opinion...

Not fair! Well whatever, no matter what I end up getting I can still round up to the nearest thenth on my resume and it will look fine I guess.

GPA doesn't mean a damn thing once you get your first job........

it can be helpful for the 1st job though, there were companies that interviewed at my college that would only talk to people over a certain GPA

hey nikki, graduating honors cut-offs vary from school to school. your school would certainly list the cutoffs on its website. if your school's cum laude cut off is 3.5, i am sure that they would not round up. 3.48 aint nothing to sneeze at though. congratulations

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to work harder then. BTW the GPA I gave was just an example, I actually have a 3.38 but I only have 77 out of 120 credits completed so far so room for improvement.
I settled for a few Bs and a couple C+ my first year which messed up my GPA. Now I'm determined to graduate cum laude. I only have to get a few more As than Bs to average enough to get a 3.50 and all that's left are mostly my major classes so I'm happy.
I'm also graduating in 3 years, do you think employers weigh that much in their decision?

at my school there isn't a gpa cutoff. it depends on percentage. i think the top 12% or something get cum laude. i had a 3.57 gpa but still didnt get it.

Exactly! most people fudge the resume anyway to make themselves look better than they are. It's a piece of paper that says you can stick to a schedule for 4 years and learn how to take a test. When you can do your job is where it will pay off. College degrees IMO are overstated. Yes I will have mine in 3 classes and in the service. If any employee really wants you, the numbers will not make a difference. Can the person do the job well is the real question.

I never put my GPA in my resume and I never look at that when I am hiring now. Afterall, do you get GPA type of ratings for CFAs, CPAs, CFPs, etc ? Besides, you are not really comparing apples with apples. Getting a 3.5 in one school does not mean that you are better than a 3.0 in another school.

Getting a degree only puts you in the same field as the other 60 applicants. What makes you different? Certainly GPA is not a factor. It is that it factor that does it for me.

Don't mean to be discouraging but last time when we were looking for an entry level dealer, we have got 400 applicants, all with min. of 1 BSc or BA, 2 applicants have PHDs and nunerous MBAs and Masters. GPAs does not attract attention.

Nikki, Look in the field that you are interested in going into or in and see what it takes to stand out above the rest. Is it a master's degree or other certifications? Experience goes a long way as well. Do your best in school and finish your degree.

That can only get you in the door but skills are what they look for. Even the smartest guy can fail if they perform below average.
