If you want to go balls to the wall with a built engine, etc get a WRX and drop a built Cosworth motor in there.

Forget the 335I with the N54 HPFP issues. You won't miss the 328 by buying one or the other since the 328I is anemic in terms of power. It suits a certain crowd but if you're into track-high performance it's a huge step foward and the Bmw won't be missed. Avoid the MR by any means. My friend has an 08 GSR he had stupid issues like rust spots on his white paint along with broken display screen in the dash+ back bumper was chipping+ noisy brakes(fixed with other pads) other than the that the car has been so far so good.

I asked myself the same question some months ago, came out with an STI. It is the best all purpose family friendly street car that with a few mods can be equally competent at the track. This IMO is the new direction for these types cars now...but there is no doubt that the evo x gsr and mr are ready to go the track right off the showroom floor whereas the sti will need a couple items first...

Just traded my BMW and picked up an Evo X GSR. It is smoother (shocker there) and has way more power. I couldn't be happier.

I used to own a 12' STI Limited Sedan. Really enjoyed the car but traded it and went electric to save some $$. Before buying it, I test drove a 2010 Evo X MR twice. Also a great feeling car.

Hands down, the STI is a more comfortable car for daily driving and commuting. That said, the MR is more tolerable in traffic.

The MR handles better out of the box, but frankly 99% of drivers can't push either to their limits on stock suspension.

The STI's tranny/diffs are pretty bulletproof. The MR tranny can have some issues with track use and more power, but there are people running 500whp through them.

The STI's motor is what is lacking. Stock, it feels OKAY. The power is there, but doesn't feel smooth. They're still having issues with ringlands, so that's always a consideration when going much above 300whp.

The STI feels like a bigger car, and it is. If you're a tall guy like myself, forget about getting an adult behind you in the Evo. In the STI its not an issue . . . loads more legroom.

As a performer, I'd definitely give the Evo a shot. As a primary daily driver, unless you hate shifting, the STI is a good mix of daily drivability and performance.

I'm surprised to see people commenting on the 335i being more expensive to mod. We have one, and at least in terms of power, it's some of the best bang for the buck out there. A few K to have 400rwhp . . . try that on an STI. EVOs are a bit easier, but I'd venture still close to the 335i costs. Also keep in mind that whatever you do, you're only going to get 20-22mpg from the STI or Evo. I drove the STI like a doll during the week, and managed to average 21mpg. The 335i we have has loads more power, and can get 30mpg pretty easily.

These issues are exaggerated, and fixed by the dealer free of charge, even outside the regular car warranty. The N54 is proving to be a real powerhouse of a motor, and I believe has won numerous engine of the year awards.

STI for me mainly because you are stuck with a 5-speed manual or a silly automatic with the evo. 6th gear on the highway is worth the minute sacrifices in performance. I think the hatch is not only attractive, but very practical, much more so than the evo.

I love this convo....If u want to Mod and be fast get an EVO....If u want to stay near stock get an STI.

Ive had both and I made 500whp in my evo without a prob and had 350whp in my STI before the motor broke

Not counting the 3 yr old thread bump, I'd go for the Evo X.
Thoroughly enjoyed my MR, even though mainly stock. It wasn't perfect, but quite enjoyable to drive.

i have driven both and i like the STI better... the hatch back shape is really useful. it can load tons of stuff. it has as much space as many small SUVs.

Wow really I worked at Mitsubishi for years running the parts department and they have the worst warranty I have seen. Looks good on paper but they really try and deny deny deny everything. Also the evos really had alot of proplems main things are the 4 wheel drive pump goes after a while on them and thats limited on the warranty, also a big thing was the propeller shaft were going and transfer case couldn't handle the power a few launchs and there done

I would never recommend that car to anyone good power but feels really cheap and are way over priced brand new. I know a few guys with STI's not near as many problems and fit finish and quality is way better then Mitsu.

I've owned both. STi for daily driving and Evo X for weekend only performance car. Although I did have a 5mt Evo X so the dct in the MR would surely make for a better daily driver. The STi was 99% the performance car the Evo was and was more comfortable, so of the 2 it is the one I would recommend if it was your one and only car. Also I loved that boxer engine exhaust note. I would consider getting an STi again as my winter only car but unfortunately they hold their value like crazy so they are a little out of my beater car price range. I didn't like the Evo X as much but I'm sure it would have been more fun if I actually took it to the track on the weekends. If you only care about performance then that is the car to get. But honestly I wouldn't recommend either as your one and only car unless you are college age. BMW's have a much much much better fit and finish and are more grown up and classy. Once you get to a certain age you just look downright silly driving those types of cars but to each his own

I dont know much about the STI but I owned and X and traded it in for an 09 335i after about a year of ownership. I loved the X for what it is; a purpose built race/rally car. It made great power with simple bolts and the stock turbo. I dynoed 350whp/tq w just a DP and Perrin drop in filter. But coming from onwing a couple Audis prior my expectations for the GSR were too high. The GSR's interior particulalry the seats sucked. By this I mean Mitsu cut corners when upholstering the seats. They stapled parts of the seams and the were also coming out the seat. I did not expect this of Recaro seating. But the seats themselves were plenty comfortable and ergonomic at least for me. My only other gripe was the mpg. Granted I had the car protuned with almost every bolt on. Even with the stock turbo the MPG was horrid. Mitsu should have added a 6th gear to the GSR. My car was an 08 and at the time there wasnt the option to add the leather seats found in the MR. The other nagging thing about the X was the thin paint. The paint was so thin and it flakes on the front bumper. I had it repainted after 1 winter. If the seats were better quality and the gearbox had an additional gear I would have kept it. But then again i was getting tired of the fanboy attraction and every TOM, Dick, and Harry wanting to race when I pulled out from driveway.
