Not even remotely accurate!!! Stella Artois is owned by InBev SA (Belgium) and Heineken is owned by Heineken NV (Holland,) two completely seperate companies. Believe me, I know. I used to work for InBev USA (selling Stella Artois, among other brands) and now I work for Heineken USA (selling Heineken, among other brands.)

InBev SA sold the import and distribution rights to Stella Artois to Anheuser-Busch in February of this year. Which is why I now work for Heineken (got laid off in the process.)

Stella Artois used to be a good beer, now it is total shit!! Drink Heineken (and Heineken Premium Light, Amstel Light, Dos XX and Tecate)!!!! I've got an E90 335i to pay for!

My post was more "tongue in cheek" than anything, but Stella Artois is going through huge growing pains right now. Growth in the US and globally has been tremendous, sometimes far exceeding brewing capacity. Sometimes when that happens, quality can suffer.

While Stella Artois claims a brewing heritage back to 1366, they really haven't been a global beer all that long. Stella Artois was first imported into the USA in 1999, Heineken achieving that mark in 1933, 2 weeks after Prohibition ended, claiming the title of the first beer imported into the USA after prohibition ended. So Heineken has a lot of experience brewing a lot of beer, maintaining the quality, and importing it into the USA.

Globally Stella Artois sells about 10 Million Hectoliters, and Heineken sells about 23 Million Hectoliters. Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better of course.

Stella Artois is open-code, meaning the expire date is clearly deciphered. It has a one year shelf code. So if it says "Best Before 8/31/07", that means it was bottled on 8/31/06.

Heineken isn't open coded, but it is fairly easy to decode the "brew date." It will have a a code on the back something like "7162528c1940." The first letter is the last digit of the year, in this case 2007. The next three digits are the Julian date, in this case 162, meaning the 162nd day of 2007. So this particular bottle was brewed on June 11th, 2007. Try to keep it under 6 months for best quality.

In reality, green bottles are the 2nd worst glass color for beer, with clear being the absolute worst (Corona.) But consumers (especially Americans) have equated green glass with high end premium beer. The beer is only really damaged in green or clear glass when exposed to light. So single serve will be the most "damaged", with sealed cases and 12 packs being the least damaged. So if you can, try to buy 12 packs or full cases (like at Costco) in beer that is in green bottles.

Brown bottles protect the beer the best, but are still affected by light, just at a slower rate. The best beer will always be from a keg (no light at all), followed by brown glass in sealed cases, followed by all other glass colors in sealed cases.

Light also affects milk, so buy it is in 1/2 gallon cartons instead of plastic jugs.

Sam Adams is a decent beer, but I live in the PNW, so we have a ton of great craft breweries around here, and Sam Adams doesn't really stand out. They do a great job in their marketing portraying themselves as something special, almost without equal. I think that Pyramid, Red Hook, Deschutes, Bridgeport, Sierra Nevada and others make better beer than Sam Adams, but that isn't to say Sam Adams is bad beer.

In reality, a decent portion of their beer is "contract brewed", meaning they work with other breweries to make their beer (using excess capacity.) I believe that Miller Brewing makes upwards of 20% of Boston Beer's volume (parent company of Sam Adams.) Theoretically, it is brewed to the same specification, but things like local water properties and oversight do have an impact on the beer. In comparison, every bottle of Heineken sold in the USA is brewed at Zoeterwoude, Holland.

When I'm not drinking the company brew, I love a hoppy IPA, especially from Bridgeport (out of Oregon.) Guinness is also damn tasty, when I'm in the mood for a stout.

As for bars that brew their own, it can be hit or miss. Rock Bottom and the Ram brew their own (local to me), and their stuff is pretty decent. But some of it is like playing the lottery; sometimes you win (good beer), sometimes you lose (an off batch.) Since they brew on a micro scale, batch to batch variance can be huge. That is great if you are adventorous, but terrible when you have a beer you love, but the next time it sucks.

Honestly, outside of the real shit beer (we call it Value or Below Premium in the industry), almost all beer is pretty decent. Yes, even Budweiser is pretty decent. We want people to first be a beer drinker, and enjoy beer. Then we want them to enjoy better beer, like Heineken.

But with so many beverages competing for what is sometimes called "share of stomach", it is difficult to make the connection with the consumer and keep them. Wine and Spirits have made huge gains in the last couple of years, eroding the share of beer. And things like energy drinks and other "new age" beverages have also had an impact. One can only drink so many liquids in a day, and today there are so many liquids to choose from....

Hold the beer in one had and the orange in the other. Put the orange directly over the beer and squeze the juice out of the orange. Hold it close so its not to splash in the beer. Then hold the orange and push it into the beer (dont drop it) and once your fingures are about to hit the beer let go of the orange. The most important part is not just dropping the orange in and just lightly setting the orange in the beer.

Thats how I do it for my bluemoon's and it works lake a champ.
