I understand a new version of the adapter is to be released shortly that does marginally more, and it will be a lot more expensive to offer what $20k cars offer, perhaps.

My two disappointments with the car I took delivery of last week are incomplete delivery of tech promises (menu placeholders that do nothing) and that the dealer by mistake took my storage space away and had the factory install the spare kit. The latter is not BMWs fault.

From everything I've read my '14 x5 won't be compatible with CarPlay. Id love to hear otherwise.
Man, I purposely got the spare (was stranded three times in my M5). I wanted runflats and a spare. The good news is you can sell that darn thing and make a lot of money. I personally would keep it for added piece of mind.

As for the snap in adapter, I'm not aware of anything you need it for with the exception of added signal strength. Something I'm not aware of any other car maker offering.

I also have yet to be in a car that offers what BMW does in terms of integration. I always hear about these great integrations but when I go to try them (say Infiniti?) they are never as well done as BMW.

Do you have a linky on the updated version somewhere?
(Pandora).
So said the sales guy at my dealer, but I have not found the link. Perhaps they were just keeping me in suspense.

You may want to watch this lengthy video, where a real phone nerd puts the iDrive to a real test and shows the disappointments. He has an older phone and iOS, but the connectivity issues are clear. He then goes to his cheap car at the end and shows how well it works, without a $250-400 cradle/adaptor:

I am starting another thread as I am off to a bumpy start. Car with 85 miles on it started to smoke and smell from the engine compartment.

1. As mentioned, you don't need a snap in adapter for anything he showed. You do need to connect the phone to your car (your iPhone cable works great for this )
2. It used to read and receive texts - that went away with IOS7
3. He then shows how well it works in an aftermarket system that he has installed in his "Chevy" car.
4. Honestly, if he bought the BMW for the ability to read texts well, I guess I have no comment here other than "interesting criteria"

Best bit of info I have received. Thanks. The last time I had a bimmer was in Japan at the dawn of smartphones. The next vehicles States side were MBZs which handled phone well for their era.

That features went away with iOS7 maintains optimism for me in that BMW needs to merely address firmware to catch up.

Do you know about rumors that 2015 models will have yet a different media system that will be compatible with CarPlay, and that the current F15 won't handle CarPlay?

Here is what I know...unless you (and I, and others) complain to BMW about the lack of iPhone integration (as noted, rumor has it both blackberry and droid work better), they probably won't fix it On that note, remember you can go to bmwusa.com and login and download new updates for your system that you upload via USB key (I have not checked recently if they have updated it). You will need the last 5 of your vin.

As for CarPlay, I have not heard any rumors. Alas, BMW is notorious for requiring a new car for the new features. You never know, they might surprise you, but I would be that you will need a 2016 BMW (yea, I suspect that it won't be out with the new 2015s but maybe a late addition?). Just a guess. Crazy smart (and determined) people here have gotten all sorts of new stuff to work with their old BMWs so there will be someone out there that will figure it out!

On a final note, don't forget that Amazon Music Services work with the iDrive/BMW Apps. It used to be only MOG (and they went bye bye). This was a nice surprise earlier this summer.

I still find it absurd that I can't connect to my phone via Lightning cable after iOS 7, and BMW did nothing about it.

Huh? I have IOS 7 and lightning cable and it connects just fine. It's still just a USB connection as far as the car is concerned.

Something is wrong then - mine works fine! In both of my BMWs. OEM Cable right? (as in from Apple yes?)

Do you have the CIC (with the 7-button controller) nav system? I would assume with a 2011 that you do, but that's the only reason I could think of that your phone wouldn't work. I use my lightning connected iPhone (iOS 7.1.2) all the time with my 2013 M3.

Yup, I've got CIC. I had emailed BMW about it, received no response, and headed to the dealer to have them test it out as well as look for any iDrive updates. Their conclusion was for me to purchase the snap-in adapter. I also have not seen any iDrive updates online, either.

Original cable and everything. Yours works with your 2011 1M? I searched online initially when getting the car and saw threads about it, but no one with any solution.

I was thinking about getting a permanent iPod Classic to mount in the car. That might actually be the best thing to do.

No, it really should work. No issues with my 1M (actually I had more issues with the snap in adapter in that with my 4S). Take into dealer. Also find a friend with a iphone 5 and confirm it is not your phone (and swap out cables too).
