Here is a post I wrote showing pictures and info from when I installed a Wavetrac to replace my standard open welded diff.

Not an Mfactory LSD, but the install would be the same and will give you an idea of what is involved.

So I have new bearings which I will use but told not necessary and I have seals which is best practice to replace while it's apart.

I notice there were not snap ring circlip shims in this install but was precision fitted to match oem so makes sense.

Diff installer is adamant about shims and now I read about axle nut and curious if there is anything else that should be replaced? Is axle nut a must or a nice to have?

I used the original bearings after inspecting them and found them to be in excellent condition with extremely small wear. Due to this, I also used the original circlip shims which made sure everything went back together in exactly the same position that it came apart.

If new bearings are fitted, then circlips would need to specced to obtain the correct bearing clearance plus the correct crownwheel position for in-tolerance backlash.

New seals are a no brainer as they as so cheap and also very hard to remove without distorting or damaging them slightly.

I have no idea why the pinion nut needs replacing, unless the pinion had been removed for another reason such as bearing replacement or pinion height adjustment.

Can you provide some more information on suggested shim kits for the M factory LSD? even a picture of it or something?

I rang my installer and he explained that there were no shims prior to the install, and that due to the bearings being held in with c-clips meant that there is no way for them to add shims to either side as there are no shims to remove from the opposite side.

Are the shims to go either side of the differential, or is it a shim plate that is inserted between the crown gear and LSD unit? (mine is a bolted differential).

Shims is probably a missleading word. There are NO shims on the carrier bearings. The snap clips are your source to set backlash so you must get them in the correct thickness. I bit the bullet and bought a $200 snap ring kit but if your smart about it just buy 2 really thick snap rings and tell your diff installer to surface grind them down to exact size you need.

I should have my diff built by mid next week so will have 20 left over shims if anyone is interested I can help out.

Who else had fun sourcing bearings? FML that was exhausting!

Exactly, the bearing retaining circlips are the 'shims' and are available in different thicknesses. Mine were 3.98mm and 4.10mm thick and each circlip is idented with its thickness.

Hey Chris. I am keen and will take you up on offer for the left over snap rings. We have the same diff builder and I even suggested this to him as he told me he has another one he was doing and he didn't think it would work if we needed the same size but I like you idea.

Haha what are the chances! Are you manual or auto?

I have a spare axle nut too if you need it. Somehow in all my purchases I forgot I bought one and bought another. So you have all your parts except the snap rings? Peter mentioned there was someone else waiting to see how mine went before they did theirs, I guess that's you?

Yeh so I got all my bearings from diffsonline.com and he threw in 2 extra tick snap rings, unfortunately I had already purchased the 20 pack from hpa. So you have pick of the bunch.

How accurate do you think the snap clip need to be in terms of overall size?

I'm thinking I might try to dimension one up and draw it in CAD so I can just a bunch laser cut in 5mm plate then anyone who wants them can machine them down from there. Buying a pack is such a waste unless you are an installer and do alot if them.

Has anyone else else bought the Mfactory ring a pinion kit for the manual trans?

Heads up, the states only have 1 type of pinion for both manual and auto cars. Its the splined one for slide on driveshafts.

AUS manuals have the flange for a flexi disc (the rubber thingo)

This group buy was a fantastic idea, but now... new unobtanium bearings and shims, the wrong pinion....should have just bought a pre-built Quaife from Southern BM and called it a day....It probably works out cheaper.

I just took it to Active in Melbourne and they fitted it. Drive in drive out. The diff was mailed directly to them and nothing else supplied. Old bearings were re-used.

Easy.

i felt the same as you a couple of days ago, until i completely gave up on the bearings.. then i started feeling good.. THEN i read your post

i'm buying a ring/pinion from MFactory as mine is welded. your post makes me worried i might get the wrong pinion. can you elaborate on how this affects us?

So there's 2 different options of drive shafts and also pinions.

For US delivered E82 theres only 1 option for both manual and auto and its the same as the AUS AUTO...

Not sure on your car but check realoem.com to see...Are you changing ratio?

For the 1 series E82 its like the AUS AUTO

Just had a quick look realoem says E92 is the same AUS or USA. You might be in luck! Chuck your vin in and double check yourself.

sorry.. you re-answered a question you already answered.

i take it that since you received the wrong pinion, and USA only has AUS-AUTO style 135 setups for both their MAN and AUTO cars that you have a manual 135i?

if that is the case, you might be in luck in that the 135 and 335 pumpkins are the same right? so all you would need to do is get MFactory to send you the pinion+ring from a manual 335?

The pinion fitment was entirely my fault (I didn't realise the AU fitments were different until just recently), but we are sending out the correct fitment to c0ris07 (one of our vendors have the AU fitments in stock).

For the bearings, the oem bearings can be re-used, as long as you are careful when removing them and they are in good condition.

For the shims, these are the one that we use:



The oem shim on the top (i.e the snap ring) ranges from 3.8mm to 4.3mm thick. As it is impossible to purchase these new, you either have to use the thicker shim and grind it down to size or, you do what most diff specialists do, and make up smaller shims (the shim on the bottom. 0.05-0.1mm thick) that fit under the bearing races. This allows you to move the diff around slightly to adjust the backlash.

Recognising the difficulty in finding these shims, we are currently having a large batch of them made up. We should have these ready to go sometime in January, and all LSD's sold will have a shim kit included (2 x 3.8mm snap rings + a few race shims)
