yeah that's what i was thinking but the offers i'm getting are putting me at a lost of ~$5k minimum. i think thats just outrageous.

a lease takeover would be ideal for me.

yeah i'm taking my chances right now. i have a buyer but his offer is way too low. the buyer was sending me listing after listing of ads on craigslist that he found of sellers that haven't been able to sell their car for months. i guess he was trying to convince me to go with his offer or turn into those "stuck" sellers.

Take the loss and get a smart car. In a couple years we'll be wishing we did the same.

well, i didn't put any money down for cap cost reduction. my options are what dramatically increased the sales price.

some people are paying in the $500's but thats because they put a few grand down along with the security deposit.

not true. the $3k loss is me being generous on myself. the best offer i'm getting right now puts me around $5-$6k. i'm not going to do it if it doesn't make sense.

If you were going to take a 3k hit but, as the math has already been done, you would recoupe that in ~ 8 months......that's not so bad. Obviously, it could be better, but you'd recoupe your loss in a fairly short term. The question I have is are you looking to buy a car (as in $0 financed) for your dad or are you looking to purchase & finance a car for your dad? Indirectly, I'm wondering if the money you'd save by getting rid of your Bimmer is ultimately going to cover payments for whatever car you get your dad (which is a noble thing, by the way).

did the math and if i got a civic, monthly car payments + gas would yield total savings of at least $400/month.

my dad will be financing the car under his name but i will be making the payments. if i get rid of the bimmer, i can essentially pay for his car and a civic for myself. i'm paying $627 right now on the bimmer so my dads new car and my car might put me a little over that but that's still significantly less than keeping the bimmer AND paying for my dad's new car.

Why buy him a new car? Why not used if money is so tight?

uh, that defeats the purpose of not increasing my auto expenses each month.

plus, a 2 door bimmer is not his kind of car.

ok lets get some facts and I don't mean this in a bad way.
Does your dad have a job?
Why do you have to pay for the car?

so hypothetically lets say you are paying $600/month for your BMW... you want to buy your dad a car, on top of buying another car for yourself. So that means, you will need to find a way to get 2 cars for under $600/month. I think leasing a Civic costs around $200/month or so... So I guess your only option would be to buy 2 Civics?...

yes he has a job. he was supposed to get a new family car but my sister's car broke down so he chose to buy her a new one instead.

so instead of me driving around a nice BMW while my dad drives a beat up truck, i'm downgrading so i can essentially make payments on 2 "cheaper" cars.

why do i have to? i don't have to. i WANT to.

you are exactly on point. i did the math and if i got my dad a new honda crv (which him and my mom both like) and myself a new civic SI, i'd only be paying $50 more a month than what i'm currently paying now. i'm factoring in payments and gas on the civic SI and payments only on the crv.
