Megaupload Shut Down

Your thoughts?

The government didn't even need SOPA, although this was an international collaboration.

2012 is really going to be an important year of change for the internet ... Hope for the best everyone

The anonymous attacks are a feat of awesomeness though, we need to keep fighting this. They just killed 4% of global internet traffic in one day!

could've informed us about the damn LOIC links though, only found out about 'em 2 hours later... tricksters

Damn right they don't need SOPA or PIPA. Anonymous is awesome for doing this, but I'm thinking they can only do so much... I hope they prove me wrong.

Also, reddit is still awesome

How I imagine the US government is thinking right now about Megaupload

Not to derail this thread, but shouldn't you people take up arms against your oppressive government and over throw them?

Right of Revolution...

I couldn't stream Archer last night because of this bullshit.

but for how long?
how long will you sit by idle while SOPA sodomizes your core values?
would your fore fathers have taken SOPA's dirty wang? or would they have shot at it with their guns?

There was no internet back in the 1700's...

But seriously, all we can really do is petition to our representatives and tell them how we do not agree with what they are trying to force down our throats. Petitions have been signed, and some representatives have already switched sides realizing they are being retarded, but that's about the extent of the American People's "influence" nowadays.

This is what happens when you let the government run rampant and get too out of control. Unless you have millions upon millions of dollars, you're voice doesn't mean squat.

And sure, we can "shoot at it," but too many people are afraid to. And with today's economy, too many people "depend" on the government to take care of them and do everything for them, so they won't stand up and fight.

Seeing how megaupload had more then 50 million users, that might be a bit hard to enforce LOL.

wait a minute, wait a minute.... so were all acting like its wrong of the government to shut down a site giving away STOLEN goods to attract traffic, and then advertising to make money? i love pirated goods just as much as the next guy, but im not going to be mad just because they shut down something we knew wasnt strictly legal. Thats like speeding, getting caught, and saying "what the hell is your problem, pulling me over for openly breaking the law?"

the only reason websites were up in arms over this (sopa, pipa) is because it was going to cost them money and punish them for the wrongs of other companies like Megaupload. not saying this is right to punish them because they link it, but punishing a company who makes ALL of their profits from pirated goods doesnt bother me...

I think people are more upset over the implications of what will happen to other, better intentioned websites. Or startups, that basically won't have a chance in hell of doing anything if these bills are passed. A lot of it has to do with the vagueness of the law, since it allows a lot of room for interpretation by the government (i.e. gives them a little too much power possibly if they decide to abuse it). Of course people are blowing things out of proportion just a tad, but I think people have just started to always assume the worst right off the bat.

hosting sites are the middlemen. people are the facilitators... they aren't targeting the right people.

FTFY (as an example).

The fact is these sites are the distribution network for the stolen goods. One single pirate can't reach 50M people a day. The sites help them reach a larger audience. If you take out the distribution network then the good can't be moved around.
