Trade in pricing

Generally speaking, if you are trading in a high-priced vehicle for a lower-priced vehicle, is that more unattractive to the dealership?
I'm not sure if the differential is an issue, or is it simply a numbers game; value for trade, cost for new vehicle, difference unimportant.
Friend is going to trade her SAAB convertible for something on the same level- sort of a lateral trade, if you will.
Trade on the SAAB is $30-33K per KBB, NADA, etc- they may be worthless, but that's all we have to go on at this point.
She's looking at: Acura TL, Lexus IS, BMW 328, Audi A3/A4. All retain in the low-mid 30's.
Just curious to hear your experiences, suggestions, etc.
Thanks-
