looking for golfers input

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a new driver (I've had my old school burner bubble since 95-96)

BUT, , I'm lefthanded so just going down to the store and trying stuff out doesn't really work very well

I'm looking at the X460 tour callaway (closed face on the non tour model makes me not want it)

and the R5, R7 taylor made

anybody's feedback who's tried those is appreciated!

Thanks

Ward

Cant go wrong with callaways....If you have the $$$, get the big BIG BIG BIG Berthas

I went from a set of Taylor Mades to a whole new set of Callaways (last yr)

Although I would say Callaways, but it may not work for you.
Golf Drivers are pretty much individual taste IMHO, what brand works for me may not necessarily work for you.

If you have a golf center near you that can fit you, I would suggest
trying both those Drivers on an inside driving range and have someone measure your swing speed.

Choose the one that gives you the best speed based on the same amount of swing effort. Make sure both sets have the same shaft stiffness to be fair in your swing speed testing. (STIFF/FIRM or REGULAR shaft)

Stiff shaft gives you more accuracy, but can be harder to control especially for new golfers. For new golfers swings are generally slow, which can cause the shaft twist.

Regular shaft are more forgiving, but not as accurate for it flexes more during your swings, especially during the down swing, when you are giving the hoof factor. ie timing and rhythm.

Most scratch players, even buys just a driver head to accustomize it with their favorite shafts, and grip to accomodate their type of play.

Some folks have different sets of drivers, and will bring the best drivers they know works well on the course they play in. For there are courses that requires alot of fairway placement shot that are narrow, thereby they chooses accuracy over distance. And some rather have distance vs. accuracy because they figure the short game will carry them thru the game.

Final thoughts are, try them on the range, the course, and see how they play and how the driver gets to know you. Some Pro-shop have
demo-drivers you can use.

Hope it helps! and let me know when you are on the course btw, so I get a heads up to get cover!

FOREEEEEEEEEEE!

as usual its my .02 cents

Thanks guys,

I may try looking at a few more shops to see if anybody's got the tour version of the X460,

being left handed is good, in that it's almost impossible to impulse buy clubs but seriously, most golf shops have more right handed callaway X460's than they have left handed drivers of all makes and models!

I usually like to play more players type clubs rather than the most forgiving things I can get my hands on and I've got a pretty good clubhead speed, so stuff like that in left hand is even harder to find!

I guess at least I'm not a left handed woman, that would make it almost completely impossible!

I agree with you, I went through big bertha, 975D, king cobra, etc and end up using a Orlimar mid size driver(not long but 80% fairway does it for me)

If you got a good speed, Titanium shafts are the lightest out their and I consider exceptional for fast swingers. But I havent been in the market lately to see whats new.
Im still playing with my Ping-Eye IIs, Cobra's 1+3, Callaways #3.
and would you believe, Tommy Armour!
It works for me why change it.
Good Luck on your choices, thats also where the fun is.

Well, I just happened to be down at the PGA TOUR Superstore at lunch yesterday and hit a few with the Callaway FT3, 8.5 Tour, with the NV 65-S shaft in it. Even the "Tour" version seemed to me to have a very closed face.

My current driver is a Titleist 983E 8.5 with a Fujikura Pro95 shaft in it. I prefer a heavier shaft since it helps with my tempo. I feel like I can whip the ultralight shafts around too much. My SS is around 110-115 mph, with a ballspeed of around 160-165mph.

Honestly, I have yet to find a driver that I can hit as well as my 3 year old Titleist. I think that part of my problem is that most shops (big stores and specialty shops) don't stock drivers with anything more than the stock, ultralight shafts.

Having said all that, my good buddy has a Ping G2 with the Aldila NV and he loves it.

Sorry for rambling...

Hehehe R7 here!! I got the R5 for Driver 3 and Callaway X-18 pro for irons

Love the R7.. You don't need to put that much power because it already has the weight that gives it force...
