Google voice

I just signed up for google voice, and I was curious if anyone else has been using it. From what I can tell thus far it seems like it does everything that trapcall does, in a different way, and without the nagging and advertisements. For example, you can block callers by marking them as spam, and it is set up to automatically screen blocked calls. It uses VOIP, and when you sign up, you actually get another phone number that you can give people. You can then map one or more phones to this number, so if someone calls your google voice number it can actually ring multiple phones. Seems cool so far, but there may be some gotcha's haven't run across yet.

For those of you already using it, what are your impressions?

I have had a Google Voice number since they bought the original company... i believe it was called Grand Central.

It is NOT a novel concept and their implementation isn't the best. It is, however, free, and hopefully Google will throw some talent at the platform to make it a little more 'slick'.

I do like the Voicemail-to-Text transcription option they have...

I have it. The biggest benefit for me is the free calls since I make a lot of long distance calls to California for work from my cell. There is a Google Voice app for the Palm Pre which basically looks like the Pre's dialler page. When I use it, I get a free call.

I can also initiate the call from a browser in which case it dials my cell first and then connects me.

Put your name on the waiting list. Took me about 3 months to get mine plus I was able to pick a 410 area code which is what I wanted.

There is no downside or catches. Don't ask me how they do it.

The downside is it's in beta and sometimes it doesn't work. I missed some pretty important calls because Google Voice happened to be down in the past.

No need for the waiting list, I already signed up. I appreciate your (and everyone elses) input. Has anyone used the call blocking yet?

Useful for me since I have skype unlimited and my cell phone. When I'm home I want my skype to ring (i don't give it out often) but when I'm away I want my cell phone to ring. Google voice rings both and whichever picks up first it will direct the call to which is nice.

Also gv is perfect since you can screen calls if you want to as well as change cell phone numbers and not worry about having to give it out to people all over again.
