For this 66th edition of the Total 24 Hours of Spa, the line-up announces itself to be truly exceptional, exactly 90 years after the first edition the biggest race exclusively reserved for GT cars can again boast a large entry list. It is the most popular race in the country and the most covered of all endurance races exclusively reserved to GT cars in the world. These thoroughbreds, entered by the best teams, will defend the colours of some of the most prestigious car manufacturers: Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari, Porsche, Nissan, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren, Bentley, Jaguar ...

But the Total 24 Hours of Spa is not only a spectacular race, it is also the occasion for the whole family to enjoy the events in the Total 24 Hours of Spa Village. Young and old will certainly appreciate the atmosphere, and on top of that they can also attend the exclusive concert on Saturday evening.

***
Just over two weeks before the Total 24 Hours of Spa, most teams participating in the highlight of the 2014 Blancpain Endurance Series have finalised their line-ups. The regular top notch drivers of the Series get the company of former F1 drivers and winners of the Le Mans 24 hours.
No fewer than 60 cars – representing 11 prestigious car manufacturers – are entered for the 90th anniversary edition of the Total 24 Hours of Spa. And that number might even increase, with a couple of teams such as NovaRacing (Nissan) and Brussels Racing (Aston Martin) still working on their entries as we speak. Victory in the biggest endurance race exclusively reserved for GT3-cars is coveted by Blancpain Endurance Series regulars and other GT-specialists alike.

Pro Cup: Extra cars to compete against the Series’ leaders

Last year’s winners, HTP Motorsport, add a third Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 to the two cars that finished 3rd and 4th in the recent three-hour race at Le Castellet. That third car will be driven by Maximilian Buhk, who shared last year’s winning car with Bernd Schneider, now joining Harold Primat and Nico Verdonck on the #84 car.

Pro Cup colleagues Belgian Audi Club Team WRT enter a third car in the category as well. The #2 R8 LMS ultra will have the illustrious trio of Lotterer-Fässler-Tréluyer at the wheel. The Audi trio has won the Le Mans 24 hours three times, at the wheel of a prototype of the German manufacturer. Obviously they are aiming to join the very select group of drivers that have won the French and Belgian endurance classics in the same year (only Luigi Chinetti in 1949 and Romain Dumas in 2010 have accomplished this feat) but their task will not be easy. Series regulars ART Grand Prix – leading the Pro Cup team standings – and M-Sport Bentley – winners of the last two races of the current season – will want to continue their streak of podium finishes, especially since the points tally of the Total 24 Hours of Spa is twice that of a regular race Blancpain Endurance Race. A fact that the squad of the Sainteloc Racing Audi, third in both driver and team standings, will keep in the back of their minds as well.

The reigning team champions in the Blancpain Endurance Series Pro Cup, BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS, will not have to worry about scoring points, since the Total 24 Hours of Spa is the only round of the Series they will enter this year. The Belgian squad will try to erase the memories of a disappointing 24 hours of the Nürburgring and can count on the services of five official drivers from BMW Motorsport.

Pro-Am Cup: Half the field

The fight for the win in the Pro-Am Cup could become the most fearsome on the Circuit de Francorchamps. No fewer than 31 cars are entered in this category, where professionals, young rising stars and gifted gentleman drivers combine their talents to aim for glory. Some of them are not only chasing the laurels in the Pro-Am category, but might will be among the overall frontrunners as well, as last week’s Le Castellet Pro-Am winners Nick Catsburg and Henry Hassid showed when finishing only a handful of seconds off the overall podium.

The most striking entry in the Pro-Am Cup is the impressive AF Corse delegation. The Italian squad enters no less than four cars. The Prancing Horse is the best represented manufacturer in the category by a long way – there are 13 Ferrari 458 in Pro-Am – but other brands get a serious boost as well. The Aston Martin of MP Motorsport will get the company of two other Aston Martin Racing supported Vantage GT3, cars entered by Beechdean and Leonard Motorsport. One of the drivers on the latter will be former Grand Prix-driver Pedro Lamy. The sole Lamborghini of the Total 24 Hours of Spa is entered by the Australian Pro-Am squad Lago Racing. The All-Australian quartet consists of Roger Lago, David Russell, Steven Richards and Steven Owen. The most recent Australian team taking on the daunting challenge of the Total 24 Hours of Spa was Juniper Racing in 2008.

Gentlemen Trophy: Who can beat GT Corse by Rinaldi?

On each of the first three rounds of the 2014 Blancpain Endurance Series the drivers standing on the top step of the Gentlemen Trophy podium were driving the #458 GT Corse by Rinaldi Ferrari 458. Alexander Matschull and Frank Schmickler, twice joined by Pierre Ehret, are of course aiming to make it four in a row in Spa, but the competition will be stronger than ever.

AF Corse have two cars in the Gentlemen Trophy as well – bringing their grand total to six cars – and during the first three rounds of the 2014 Blancpain Endurance Series they have proven to be very quick, with Portuguese driver Francisco Guedes taking pole in the category on each occasion.

Local favourites Belgian Audi Club Team WRT have added a double Total 24 Hours of Spa-winner to their line-up. Fred Bouvy took the overall win in the Belgian classic in 1999 and 2000, the last two years of the touring car era. Since then Bouvy has added a third place to his tally, sharing the PK Carsport Corvette in 2007.

Three new teams have extended the traditional Audi vs. Ferrari battle in the Gentlemen Trophy to a five-way fight. GDL Motorsport (Mercedes SLS AMG GT3), Delahaye Racing (Porsche 997 GT3R) and PGF-Kinfaun (Aston Martin Vantage GT3) add some spice and variety to the category. The Vantage GT3 has John Gaw, team principal of Aston Martin Racing, among its drivers.

Stephane Ratel (CEO and founder SRO Motorsports Group): “I am very happy to see the enthusiasm of so many teams for the highlight of the 2014 Blancpain Endurance Series. Year after year, the Total 24 Hours of Spa has proved its status as the pinnacle of global GT competition. The field for the 90th anniversary edition of the great race will be an accurate reflection of the progress enjoyed by the Blancpain Endurance Series, which has delivered three outstanding races so far this season. Furthermore, there are quite a number of factory supported drivers distributed between a good selection of top quality teams to create some truly epic fights at the front of the field. These battles have established the Blancpain Endurance Series as the strongest GT-specific series in the world. The 2014 edition of the Total 24 Hours of Spa looks set to be a classic.”

It will certainly again a thrilling race. "

Craig Lowndes and Andrea Piccini join AF Corse for Total 24 Hours of Spa and will be driving AF Corse's Ferrari 458 Italia.

Craig Lowndes (#52 AF Corse Ferrari): “I've driven at Spa before and it's an incredible track. After our success at the Bathurst 12 Hour in February this year, I just knew we had to put something together. I've been wanting to do more GT racing in Europe for a number of years, so to finally have such a great event locked in for 2014 is very exciting. The combination of a Ferrari and the Spa circuit really is a dream come true."

We are excited about extending the activity of our team to endurance racing and there could not have been a better car to do so than the Audi R8 LMS ultra,” Igor Salaquarda said. (Igor is ISR Racing's team principle)

Marc VDS's Bas Leinders will not be in the driver's seat this weekend. It will be Lucas Luhr taking his place on the No. 77 BMW Z4 GT3 next to Markus Palttala and Dirk Werner.

“The decision was taken after the Nürburgring 24. The team was missing a clear leading figure and I will take that roll on me, focusing on strategy and organization."
-- Bas Leinders

He also said;
"“I’m very happy with Lucas joining the team. I’ve already known him for a very long time, as we competed against each other in German Formula 3 back in 1998.”

and later;

"“Being a team leader and driving the car at the same time is hard, especially when demanding something from the drivers and not knowing everything that is going on around you.

“Marc van der Straten wanted me to drive, though, and it’s not the end of my career as a racing driver. The decision only concerns the Spa 24 for now.

“If we had won the Nürburgring 24, I think the decision could have been different… I already proposed to Marc that I stop as a driver in 2011, but things worked out and I was able to delegate certain things to other people.”

Bentley, the obvious secret favorite?

The largest class meeting of the GT3 category will be held again this year at Spa-Francorchamps. Also present: (almost) everythin in GT racing by both rank and name.

61 GT3 sports car of eleven manufacturers have been announced for the upcoming weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, the 90th running of the 24-hour race in the Ardennes. GT fans can therefore forfeited to law in gasps, especially since the weather is supposed to be changeable, and thus the degree of difficulty for drivers, teams and cars still increased. So there are all the ingredients for a worthy highlight of the Blancpain Endurance Series available, especially since there are a good dozen of victory candidates.

Bentley with good starting position in GT3 customer sports. Strolling however in Spa of the paddock, will bring this set but only with a wry grin on his lips. To blurs the boundaries between plant use, factory-backed teams and customer respectively private teams at the high quality of drivers and teams.

At the most open in this area Bentley: The core team is the experienced rally troops M-Sport with Malcolm Wilson. Two Pro-cars, money and driver (Smith / Meyrick / Kane and d'Ambrosio / Leclerc / Tappy) by Bentley leave little room for imagination. Although the beefy Continental is not one of the sleekest representatives of his profession, he has a sophisticated aerodynamics and so far has proved remarkable reliability - and that in the very first year of service. Despite two wins in three BES runs suspects the competition that the British have not yet shown their full potential.

Spa 24 Hours: The entry list for the race
Audi and BMW to intensively engage different
Mercedes goes as defending race: Both Maxis Buhk and Götz and veteran Bernd Schneider defeated in 2014 in the HTP-gullwing the BES establishment. 2014 is no longer unites the trio, but HTP has reported three very busy SLS: Buhk / idol / Jafaar, Afanasiev / Dusseldorp / Maassen and Schneider / Verdonck / primate. Two cars of Black Falcon, which seem to be occupied something more heterogeneous, but also have potential to complete the Mercedes Group in the professional class.

Audi, however, has combined the old master of the four rings in Belgium for the season highlight: In the three R8 LMS of the WRT in the Pro standings give the GT-rounder and illustrious guest starters the valance in the hand. Rest / Vanthoor / angle Hock and Stipplers / Mies / Nash are the established BES forces while with Fässler / Tréluyer / Lotterer the Le Mans fraction of the Ingolstadt is launched. Add to that the current in the BES best-placed Audi of Saintéloc with Ortelli / Sandström / Guilvert and the solid ISR-powered car with Basseng / Hamprecht / Salaquarda.

BMW puts everything on one card. Their name is Marc VDS Racing. The Belgian team has reported two Z4, bursting their crews before quality outright. Something other than the overall victory as the goal is for the trio Farfus / Martin / J. Müller and Luhr / Palttala / Werner hardly imaginable. The two Pro-Am cars of TDS Racing are indeed filled with strong top drivers, but will hardly be able to compete for more than a happy podium.

McLaren needs "only" stability
If it was only after the speed, so the victory at Spa would probably only go about McLaren: ART Grand Prix has been heard in the BES of the strongest teams. This will probably not change in the two crews in Spa (Demoustier / Lapierre / Parente and Estre / Korjus / Soucek). But the McLaren has not just a reputation for technical reliability, so that a McLaren win would be the only reason why a small sensation. But be careful: With Von Ryan Racing the British throw a third cars in the field. Here, among other things, the V8 Supercars star Shane Van Gisbergen on board. And the year has already impressively demonstrated in Bathurst, as fast as he can the 12C GT3 whip around a challenging course.

The last Ferrari victory in the 24-hour race at Spa is now already a decade ago: in 2004 won a Ferrari 550 GTS - according to the regulations of the Blessed GT1. This year, though nearly 20 Ferrari 458 are, but none of them is located in the pure professional category. Castellaci / Gay / Rizzoli Villorba Corse are the most uniform and to date in the BES also most successful team of the Italian sports car bedrock, meanwhile, with none of the AF Corse car is always occupied quickly. The same is also true for the Porsche teams.

Nissan is limited with two GT-R and the Academy graduates on the Pro-Am standings and setting a few highlights. Aston Martin is not much more left over: Works drivers mosquito, Lamy and Turner are distributed in the Pro-Am standings and the only Pro-Vantage of Oman is missing Racing with Al Harty / Caine / Yelley probably the necessary punch. Contrary to previous announcements, it is added to any Spa Aston-plant use. The only Lamborghini in the field comes from Australia: The self-propelled team boss Roger Lago has three illustrious compatriots (Russell / Richards / Owen) for his Spa debut in the luggage, so that a finish is probably the minimum target.

Three times points in the Ardennes
At Spa, the long race distance will be awarded a total of three points on reason. In the 6 - and the 12-hour mark half the usual points are output. For the final result after 24 hours there is then additionally the full yield as it is also common in the other runs.

By this point structure especially the regular BES team tactics and weigh between race strategy and important championship points. The "guest driver" can divide their race for the overall victory to himself, however. However, the restriction applies a stint at 65 minutes for all.

Daniel Lloyd for Beechdean Aston-Martin:

“It really is like a mini Le Mans,” Lloyd describes. “We’ll be there on Tuesday and then it all starts with the parade and autograph signings in the village. It’s a huge race and technically the biggest of its kind in the world, at Le Mans you’ve got different categories like LMP1, LMP2, GTE – at Spa you’ve got 60 or so GT3 cars all racing together. I can’t wait, I’ve just got to expect the unexpected!”

Today a new trophy for the Total 24 Hours of Spa was unveiled during the drivers’ briefing for the highlight of the Blancpain Endurance Series. The trophy, offered by SRO Motorsports Group to the RACB, reflects the 90th anniversary of the Belgian endurance classic and bears the names of all the previous winners of the prestigious event.

Stephane Ratel was the driving force behind the creation of a new trophy for the Total 24 Hours of Spa. In the year of the 90th anniversary of the event – and the 50th of the modern version of the endurance classic - the CEO and founder of the SRO Motorsports Group wanted to create a distinctive trophy that reflects the race’s rich history. 1924 was not only the year of the first 24 hours of Spa – then called ‘Grand Prix de Spa’ – but it was also the period in which the Art Deco movement was immensely popular. After a quest in several antique shops Stephane Ratel found a trophy that was created in the mid 20s and therefore has the same age as the 24 hours itself.

The current trophy – which from now on will be the annual prize for the victors of the Total 24 Hours of Spa – is set in a base which has the names of all the winners in the rich history of the event. Every new winner will have the honour to add his or her name to a list which already includes some of the most prestigious names in motorsports’ history, like Luigi Chinetti, Mike Hawthorn, Jacky Ickx, Eric van de Poele, Bernd Schneider and many others. The SRO Motorsports Group hopes that in the years to come this trophy will see some great drivers and teams add their names to the trophy.

The unveiling of the new trophy was not the only good reason to be in Spa today. Moments after all drivers participating in the 66th running of the Total 24 Hours of Spa had a group picture taken at the famous Raidillon corner they drove their racing cars over public roads from the track to the town centre of Spa, where they were greeted by thousands of enthusiastic fans, eager to admire cars and drivers participating in the endurance classic. The Total stage was the centre of feverish excitement, providing drivers with an opportunity to introduce themselves to the public and in return the drivers signed thousands of autographs.

Tomorrow will see the first on track action at the 7,004 km long track in the Belgian Ardennes, when at 11.55 the 61 cars for the 2014 Total 24 Hours of Spa will participate in the free practice session. On Thursday evening the pre-qualifying and qualifying session will determine the 20 quickest cars that will be able to participate in the Superpole on Friday.
