If your interests are in American history there's none better than Virginia. It has both Colonial and Civil War sites throughout. The Fredericksburg area (25 mile radius) alone would keep you occupied for the better part of a week. Stretch that to 50 miles and a history buff would be in seventh heaven. And there are some pretty good vineyards on the Northern Neck.

If you're interested in the beach there's Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore (don't have any experience there, though). When you're bored of the beach, the mountains are four hours drive away.

Boston is a great choice. It's a very walkable city and awesome food...

Avalon/Stone Harbor, NJ. Love the place, if it were practical i'd live there year round, nice beaches, very relaxed, not like Ocean City or Wildwood, and for me i can get there in 2.5 hours from Lancaster, PA so probably and hour or so for you. As far as bars go theres a few good ones (the just redid the Princeton in Avalon). For me its perfect.
