if a dealer told me that price i would fall on the floor laughing, and then get really angry once i realize they they didnt tell me a joke. 18k is just ridiculous! i remember i had to get my turbos replaced beause of wastegate rattle. and they did it all under CPO, not a single penny charged to me and they even gave me a free loaner for the 3-4 days they had my car.

Yes this was for real for the people who think im joking, so point made, if the turbos go get aftermarket turbos for around 5000. What I didn't know was that I wasnt suppose to be running stage 2 with stock dp's, is that true that I am damaging the turbos by running that tune with stock dp's. And thanks for all the info on the magnusson act.

I'm not trying to be harsh but it will come across that way; how could you NOT know that? That info is all over the forum, Cobb's website, AND on the map descriptions. The only way you wouldn't have known that is to ignore every description pertaining to Stage 2. That being said, $18,000 is steep for anything short of purchasing a used car. I think the dealership was trying to send you a message. |

It says right on Cobb's site that Stage 2 is meant for aftermarket DPs. Yes, you could be damaging the turbos from running stock DPs. *EDIT* What dealership in CT? New Country? |

We should all call write the dealership owners and tell them that their service department is price gouging. They should also be getting as much bad publicity as we can rain on them for something so outrageous. It pisses me off to just think about a dealership doing this to someone. For every one of these instances that gets reported like this on a forum, there are probably ten instances of some poor unsuspecting car owner that doesn't understand his car and gets royally screwed.

Did they say what was specifically damaged that could've rang up $18k in damage? |

Isn't EPL in CT? Have them install you some turbos, ask jpsimon about it.
And I agree, the $18,000 was not an atual quote....just a statement by the dealer. They have certain guildlines that detail the labor involved and cost of parts, I think it's quoted at 16 hr labor + $1400 (retail) for OEM turbos + additional hardware + tax. A good indy shop can do it in 8 hours.

Why, it's common sense...but I guess it's not so common around here. The phrase "pay to play" comes to mind.

This thread made me "he he".
Sorry to hear about the OP's troubles, but c'mon man, you have 74 posts here and you don't know to take your tune out before you go to the dealer? Indy mech can get this all done for $2,000. If you want, get RBs, what do they cost $3400? so $2,000 more. |

So I got the car back today, they took out the the stock turbos that they say cost 9,000 a piece and verified that they are ok. They checked all the vacuum lines etc and couldn't find a single thing wrong with the car. It's still in low power mode and they said they give up until I take the mods off so they can test it further. As if a cold air intake has anything to do with boost pressure......
For the people asking I was never quoted 18,000 just threatened with it yesterday if the turbos turned out to be the problem. I've never read a forum on stage 2 so my bad with the stock DPs looks like I'm headed to AR. And I know magnusson doesn't cover me but I still that it was good info to know. The car is going to turner motorsports next week so they can take stab at this issue but while we are here on the topic..... What could be causing this issue now that the turbos being bad have been ruled out, and the vacuum lines are ok.

Personal example: We just had an issue with my wife's X3, and we were quoted an out the door price of about $3000 to fix. When all was said and done, the out the door price was only $2500, but $1600 was all labor. That is where they kill you. Using my dealer's numbers for an example, the rate is $135 an hour. If it is a 16 hour job, that will be $2160 in labor. If they charge your $1400 for the turbos that comes to $3560. Tax here is something like 8.25% so $3853.70...so at this point they are telling you that aditional hardware is going to be $14K? Even if they charged you $5k for just the turbos you would still have to find almost 10k in "other parts"... I would ask for a written estimate that shows all labor and parts charges. Our dealership gave us that before we authorized anything. |

I see besides the COBB tune & upgraded intake, you also have a Spearco FMIC which means once you put on the DPs you can start running the Stage 2+FMIC Maps. I'm also parting out my VRSF DPs if you're interested, they've been on the car two weeks & I got surprised by my rents with Akrapovic DPs (I didn't spend the money so it's all good). PM me if you're interested. |

Dude- buy some used turbos. For around $250- $500 here in CA you could go to a salvage yard and pick up some used, but good turbos. Then, fix it yourself to save $, or have a DIFFERENT dealership do it for a LOT cheaper.
Edit: looks like according to you, it's not the turbos. Does it throw any CEL or codes? I had a camshaft sensor go bad on the front of the engine and the engine would only run in limp mode. But that did throw a CEL. |
