your usb cable from combox to usb socket in armrest.

at the combox , unplug the cable from the black usb connector , and put it in the blue connector.

then plug the iphone cable back into the arm rest usb and check on idrive to see if its now working under the snap in.

so from blue connector on combox to usb in arm rest....

I did. With this setup is where the power keeps cycling charging on/off on the iPhone. With bmw connected app, I do the information/cable diagnostics and it won't communicate. I have a strange feeling it's my cic firmware.

could well be....I think you said it uses the file : CIC.C13

yet what ive read for bmw apps etc you need CIC.C16

do you have a way of updateing the cic? if you can don't go past this C16 as you may need a fsc code then for bmw apps

I was thinking of buying an opps setup but after spending nearly $3k for this retro.. It's gotta end a some point! But I really want apps. More emails and text msg. Careless about twit or fb.. I'd also like tune in to be controlled via the cic.

A good reference for troubleshooting. Adding VIN to Combox?

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=854827

Also for getting the apps to appear on my cic, i guess thats where i need to go C16 right?

thanks and have a great night!

Adding vin to combox isn't really priority at the moment, adding a vin will give you access to bmw live and internet.

I've never used a ssd file but I find my way a lot easier to change the vin on the combox. Which I will come to once your up and running.

Have you updated the combox to the latest software ?

I've downloaded a USB update from bmw yesterday to update the combox for iPod and iPhone compatibility. Oddly the glovebox USB wouldn't read any of my USB thumb drives. Formatted as fat or Mac OS. Assuming it only reads ntfs? I'll have to boot into win7 and try again.

I haven't been able to update my cic. Can't afford to spent another 300$ at the dealer for a cic firmware update. I called bimmerretrofit and sadly not impressed. Unable to see me or locally code my car. Had to get someone to remote my car but only in a weeks time. At least with you guys help we were able to manage it!

hey jezzy did you manage to update the combox? I was going to say , to update the combox you must use the arm rest usb, not the glove box one.

Hi. I tried but it keeps saying software not available. Tried 2 different USB drives with no success. It seems it won't read any of my USB drives or it simply thinks the software available isn't applicable?

I also need to get an ops or opps in my hands so I can do a cic update.

What size drives are you using?

Finally got it working tonight. I re-formatted both my thumb drives, and I searched on Ebay for a MY 2011 328 wagon's VIN #. I used that on the software update site :

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/con...re_update.html

And I downloaded each of the updates available for that specific MY 2011. I loaded them all up on each thumb drive, and proceeded to install them in my arm rest usb.

Finally, 1 update was recognized and installed. It now says everything is up to date. Figure something so easy would BE EASY. haha.
Next, I gotta get my hands on a OPS or someone locally to do it for me. My vacation is over in a few days, running out of precious time! =)

**EDIT** regarding the FBAS cable from snap-in to CIC, is there a plug that i need to get for the back of the CIC or is it already there and empty? i have the usb/aux 6 pin plug.

2nd, do I run 3 wires from my snap-in to the cic or usb/aux 6 pin to the cic?

thanks!

Glad you got the combox sorted

Ok 3 wires from the snap in to the cic are for video/fbas

As you used a emulator with loom extension , you should already have the connectors on the end of the extension loom. Just a matter of removing the required pins and inserting your new pins. Tape up the ones you remove.

The 6 pin is for audio only , it goes from the snapin to the 6 pin then to the combox.

Ah ok so fbas only for video which is 3 wires from snap in to cic. And for audio out, 3 wires from aux / USB to combox. So once I'm ready to tear apart my interior again.. 2x USB cables and 3 fbas wires from Center console to trunk and 3 fbas wires to head unit.

I'm not looking fwd to running those cables to trunk again. I tried once and gave up. I ran that wire over my carpet just to get things working. Does the Center console removed help? I used pry bars to lift my carpet from Center console to trunk but didn't work. I'll try the coat hanger method and tape the wires to that next time!

hahaha nice 1 , it was possibly the worst part of my install barring trying to get the existing aux socket out lol...that was a nightmare on its own

I undone to rear bolts for the centre console but it didn't make that much difference...the carpet is so tight in that position...I got some electrical wire about 2mm thick and once I got it through I taped up the 2 x usb and aux cables and pulled slowly......I did lose them a couple of times though and on the 4th attempt I thought I had pulled the end off one the cables but it was intact lol.......I went from the console to the rear...

and nice one from patryk, hope he sorts you out.....he sorted my 6NR bmw apps fsc for me......

The console to rear method is best. I did this a couple nights ago. To make it even easier, do raise the carpet over the two metal pieces the rear seat clips onto. Doing this without the center console is way better. I used a fairly big flat head to pry from the little opening. Do watch out for the metal pieces the center console bolts on as the cable may be sheered by the sharp edges of the metal. I do this fairly easy now.

Picha: I'll pay your airfare. Come on down to Canada aye!

Honestly. Wouldn't it be easier to get a USB hub
And put it under the driver seat? This way console to under seat along door sill trims to rear? Think it's be easier!

I'll try all your methods when I'm up to it. Next is waiting for the ops unit to arrive and update my cic. Cic.C16 right?

As after this ill need to update my maps and buy a fsc code for maps and apps?
Really wish I can fix my snap in issue!

I have my little travel kit ready to go man!

Not easy at all. Its more "OEM-er". With the USB hub, that's two more cables to buy and figure out the wiring to power the unit. Add taking the seat out and lifting the carpet as well. Should be fun though.

FSC questions I'm going on a limb to say yes you will need them all. Patryk chime in if you may please.

Ya good point. I've already WAY over invested in this project, but since i'm 3/4 done, need to go that extra $1k mile it seems to finish it !! lol.

Just to give an update on my voice control and mic configuration I've swapped my pins behind the glovebox in the white connector as per this post:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...660738&page=11

"Once you disconnect the male part of the white connector, you'll see yellow wire (slot 1), black wire (slot 2), gray wire (slot 3), black and white wire (slot 4), brown and black wire (slot 5), slot 6 & 7 empty, green wire (slot 8), yellow and black wire (slot 9), gray wire (slot 10).

The slot 1,2,3 is sheathed together and slot 8,9,10 is sheathed together. I removed those 6 wires and switched the places (1,2,3 into 8,9,10 respectively and 8,9,10 into 1,2,3 slot). I'm assuming one group is for VC and the other is for BT.

Plug everything back in, code it and you're done!"
