Whats up with S600 tail lights???

I was reading an article about the mercedes S600 where the tail lights flash like 8 times per second. do any of you guys know if there is any point to that?
or is it that the mb guys got bored and couldn't come up with something better?

For emergency stops it flashes quickly. It's only on the S600 since its limited production, and the government doesn't want the streets lit up like a 70's party. Mercedes hopes this technology will be able to trickle down to other cars.

That's actually pretty cool. I want to see that. Saw my first S8 on the street today. Older guy came around a a right turn hard and gunned it. It sounded really nice.

I've seen them on motorcycles as well.

I wonder how many drivers who have epilepsy but don't know it. I wonder if the brakes lights would set it off...
