This is scary. I would bet, especially since you mention your AC went out, the input wires to your blower final stage over heated and caused the fire. The wires on mine over heated, destroyed themselves. FOrtunately didnt' casue a fire since once it went out I repaired it, but they were burnt to a crisp. Check out the images below.

wires completely charred (this is input to final stage):

final stage itself charred:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Y...o/IMG_2906.jpg

the old socket melted:

Funny thing is these wires are hot even when the fan is turned off. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what caused your fire. All of this is located behind and under the fuse box right beside the main junction box

Battery cable recall was done a year ago, I don't think it was related. But I can't say for sure what happened so who knows.

isn't this caused by the FSR? final stage resistor?

it controls blower speed do e90's have the same type of resistor?

Yes, I believe some of them were. No idea if the e90 has the same type of thing. Some were also from auto headlight LCMs.

Wow. This type of thing concerns me.
OP - If you would not mind, would you be so kind as to vote on my poll for "car combusting"? It's the 4th poll.
If there are any others you can pitch in on please do so!

That looks like it may have been what happened.

That's absolutely crazy! I'm glad nobody was hurt.

I have eerily similar symptoms in my 09 e92 right now. AC fan just died two days ago and now the glove box and interior in general is getting very very hot. Needless to say I am going to get it looked at immediately.

Just echoing everyone's sentiment that they're glad you're ok.

SMFH at one more thing to add this to the list of things to be paranoid about with these cars.

Picked this up with 37K on it in October. Gonna DD it until I get my own place with a garage.

Thinking about another BMW for daily driving duties when the time comes.

Wow, crazy story OP. Glad you're okay.

On the bright side, your new ride still has AWD and twin turbos. Only your 6 cylinders are in the wrong configuration.

This just happened to my buddy's 07 135 just a week ago, burned his house down. Must be the same issue, I don't think they found out what it was yet..

its the wires entering the resistor in my opinion. They come out of the bottom and rub up on the insulation thats attached to the footwell cover. When water leaks through the windshield, it works its way down onto the insulation and causes a short.

I had an issue where my blower stopped working. When I opened it up, I found the wire/harness was burnt. Then I noticed the insulation was moist. I cleaned the contacts and insulated the wires really well so hopefully I don't see this again..

OP I'm sorry for your car. But thankfully you were not parked in a garage at home asleep and no one was hurt!
Mine did the same thing. Got connector parts from getbmwparts.com. If you look at the OP's pic that shows the floor mat, you can see part of the Final Stage Unit (fan speed controller) on the floor. It is the copper colored coil. Probably where the fire started. That connector overheat, the wiring insulation burns back and then a short starts the fire.
