I almost bought a Mini S this summer, msot fun I have ever had in a car. Go drive one, you'll love it. Take an S out, and I highly recommend the S with no options at 22 over a base with options.

How about a Civic SI? Yes they are FWD, yes they are not German engineering, but yes they do save gas and yes they are cheap. I say SI = win, Cooper S = winwin, VW TDI = fail x10

If performance isnt so much of a concern, you should look into a TSX, they are relatively cheaper than the TL Type-S and they are a good DD (lots of space and decent mpg, and you get a little bit of luxury compared to the Cooper S and Si.).

Oh yeah, Mazdaspeed 3 is also a good contestant... People say this is as good if not better than the Cooper S.

(come to think of it, my friend bought a cooper s not too long ago, has been having problems ever since..... steeringcolum etc etc...) its a great car really... just when its not in the shop.

I'm sorry, but this is insane. It's a freaking BMW 3-series, not a Lamborghini - you're talking about buying a $20k to preserve a $40k. This is like someone buying a new Toyota Avalon to keep the miles off his Lexus. Just drive the BMW and if anything happens to it, use some of the money you were going to spend on a 2nd car to fix it properly. As much as you like it, it's built to be standard everyday transport. Save the garage queen treatment for something special and rare that you can't drive in inclement weather, like a classic, or exotic, or just a dedicated sports car.

2009 Honda Fit, enough said. I drove one the other day, great little car. Plus it can carry 60 cubic feet of crap if you need it to. 27 city 34+ highway doesn't hurt either.

But what they're saying is you spending 20k on a mini to keep your 3 series clean with low miles will cost you more then just driving your 3 daily and racking up the miles.

You live in Texas and you're talking about weather conditions? I live in Canada and the rwd 3 is my daily all year. Just drive you car, life is too short to make a 3 series a queen.

it's a blast to drive. handles like a champ. you can park anywhere. great mileage (28mpg average on my JCW). totally different car from the e9x.

test drove the S and i loved it. then i jumped into a JCW and wow, night and day! i guess that's what an extra ~40hp does

i have a dark gray 2006 JCW that's practically fully loaded minus navigation i might be thinking about selling. just over 20k miles.

Well, I don't know about full, I count one in this thread.

Look, your stated goal is to preserve your E90 by spending $20,000 on another car.

Preserve the value? The only way that works is if, when you go to sell your entirely common 3-series in 4 years, you're offer $20,000 more than the next guy because it's low miles. Unlikely. And even then, you'd only break even.

Preserve it's condition? Keeping it garaged (and you must have a garage - you can't think you'll preserve the car street-parking it, right?) and having it detailed twice a year will work wonders. Maybe a clear-bra would help as well, if you do a lot of highway driving. You could repaint and re-upholster the thing for $20k - a couple of times.

Preserve the engine? That's good for 200k+ miles if you maintain it properly, meaning it would last the average person (who drives 15,000 miles a year) 13 years. And 20 grand invested for 13 years should cover any mechanical repair issue not caused by parking the car in a crusher with a trunk full of low-fat blue cheese salad dressing.

But hey, 30 years from now when I see a mint condition 335i crossing the stage at Barrett-Jackson for a hundred grand, boy, will I feel silly.

Lol, talk about taking things out of context. When did I say I want to "preserve" my car Unlike you, Mr cute little M coupe, I treat my 335 like its a Ferrari because to me it is. Whether you feel the same way as me is irrelevant since thats not what my topics about so how about you do me a favor and "preserve" your useless comments to yourself

They are expensive, unreliable, and dirt and snow kicks up on the rear window from the short rear overhang. Oh yeah and the freakin dial inside is about the size of a clock that flavor flav would wear on his neck. Yeah they are fast and good handling cars if you can get over all of the above.
