We've come a long way since the 80's. They look nothing like the production cars.

These DTM cars leave me cold, as they're like the NASCAR of Germany. I've been told that they are shells over tube frame race cars. They're too distant from the real production cars. But at least they don't have stickers for headlights! Give me ALMS with the production car monocoque any day! Or, of course F1.

Still love the late 80's early 90's DTM. These tube-framed are not the same as production cars dynamics, which most of us can't really relate.

It should be homologated production M3 vs C63 vs RS4.
Rivalry was really fierce between BMW and Merc with their E30 M3 Evo's and 190E's 2.5-16 Evo.
Don't think it will be an easy time for BMW. Don't under estimate Mercedes with their limo image. Their racing background is long and illustrious.
Can't wait to see the big 3 battling again.

Doesn't look as good as the ALMS challenger to be honest, but I hope it will go like stink on the track.
Anyone else noticed how particularly bad the Audi looks? I mean it's not odd looking, it's just baaad...

EDIT: And when I say bad, I don't mean that in a good way.

I think the Audi is the best looking out of the three.

DTM cars are closer to a F1 car than say a NASCAR. Its like saying a Indy car is just as cutting edge as a F1 car. No way. DTM is top tier racing. Not just for close racing but for the tech that goes into the cars as well.

Here are some photos from DTM race in Munich this past June.

I don't believe he was comparing technology of the two series. But rather in each respective series the cars are similar and nothing like a production road going car.

Yes DTM is much more advanced. But Audi, Benz, and BMW DTM cars are very similar due to the regulations. Engine size and power output are nearly the same. Only big difference is the aero packages.

I see the point he is trying to make.

Enjoy the ALMS car while it lasts, BMW will pull out of ALMS when the V8 E92 M3 runs its course. They will not be able to run the new forced induction M3 in endurance racing due to regulations. This is why BMW is entering DTM, these cars are one off race cars. Nothing like a road going M3.

Correct! I wasn't trying to say they they are low tech. And by the way, thanks for the pics they look great. I'm voting for series that are either production based, or flat out racing cars with no attempt to make them look like production cars.

Here is the first look at the BMW M3 DTM decked out in full M Performance gear. It was revealed this evening, two days prior to the car's debut at the season ending DTM event at Hockenheim.

Speaking at the event, BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt, revealed that "The car’s aerodynamics were developed in close collaboration with the engineers from series production. The BMW Group boasts impressive resources in this field and the wind tunnels are ultra-modern. This – and the Title Partner BMW M Performance Accessories – shows that the entire company is behind the 2012 DTM project and is working hard towards it... Old-school DTM fans will recognize from the typical BMW M stripes that the appearance is based on the original BMW M3 cars from the 'old DTM'. We are very proud of this design. It is both traditional and modern in equal measures. It shows our roots, but in a contemporary style."

BMW has a lot of catching up to do, compared to Audi and MB. I would be shocked if they had a driver in the podiums other then Bruno Spengler.
