Angry 6MT jumps to neutral from 1st

Searched around and didn't find anything pertaining to this. Anyone ever hear of this?

Starting off in 1st sometimes my 6MT will pop into neutral. If I'm going slow it's not that big of a problem, but if I'm pulling away from a light, it can be quite violent. All other gears are not a problem. No grinding or any other noise. I've been very conscientious of it, so I've been double sure I fulling engaging 1st. It's scary as hell.

Sounds like a slipping clutch or a worn transmission.

Only 27k miles. The revs don't increase while in 1st without power going to the rear. She violently jumps outta first. Some kind of weird gate problem.

I had a similar issue on an non-BMW MT back in the day, it started popping out of 1st when it felt like it. It was more prone to happening under heavier acceleration. I even tried several MT fluids with different friction modifiers over the course of a week or two hoping for any positive effect. That was wishful thinking. I was pretty convinced it was synchros, but it turned out to "simply" be a broken dog ring retainer. Cheap part, but, of course, the tranny had to be taken apart to find the real issue and fix it.

27K is really low mileage to be having tranny problems

At that mileage you should still be in warranty. Have you already talked to your dealership for a diagnosis?

My 20 year old E12 5-series had this problem--would pop out of 1st and 2nd. Problem was the result of extreme wear. Solution was a $300.00 junkyard 4spd MT.

Sounds like you will be covered by warranty so probably best to bring it in...

Can be motor mounts...synchros is the most likely culprit but thats very unusual for that gear since barely ramming that into gear.

I had a similiar problem in my 2008, it'd pop out of reverse to neutral. It only did it for a few days then stopped.

They're replacing the entire transmission!
Guess it's better than a piecemeal repair job.

Wow. Did they give you any details as to what the issue was? Lucky you with the new tranny.

Sweet deal. Wish they had a diagnosis to warn others about though.

No diagnosis. Don't think they even cared to find out. Why spend time problem solving when it's under warranty. Just spend the 4-6 hours in labor to replace and have some intern at the factory take the core apart to diagnose.

sounds to me like someone is either not rev matching their downshift to 1st or not waiting till a full stop to re-engage 1st gear and forcing it (you can feel the synchros binding) this started happening to me in my s2000 but of course it was heavily modified and 2 step launch control is not friendly on the tranny.

I doubt it. I don't think the clutch or the flywheel was the problem. Probably some little selector level dumagiggy thing deep inside the tranny. It would be nice to have a new clutch, but what good would a new inertial mass (flywheel) do me?

Personally I always do. But I bought the car with 25k on it. But rev match would save the clutch, don't see how that would cause these symptoms. I don't think the clutch is the problem at all. Now if I couldn't get it into gear, I could see a clutch as possible problem, but popping out of gear? Now smashing it into first before coming to a stop, I can see. Eventually I could see breaking some synchro lever engaging thingy. If I have any momentum I do 2nd, but like I said, I'm second owner.

I'm just trilled this happened now while under warranty. I would be furious if this was out of warranty. I've only driven a couple hundred miles, but it seems to be perfect.

I just read this again, you rev match downshift to 1st? I've never hear of downshift to first while on the move! I've always come to a complete stop to use 1st or else I'm using second. Is that even possible!? Sounds like some PlayStation Grand Turismo move.

naw out here, there is a small track at Toronto Motorsports plex. it has a very sharp hairpin turn that due to my s2000 extreme rev range (10k rpms) i could downshift to first to get max tq coming out.
