I'm also saving for my house deposit and aim to move on next Jan/Feb all going well. This constant aspersion that the younger owners of decent cars have had them bought by mummy or have the spare cash due to free accomodation irritates me. I know you didn't say all of us, which is good - but again. I've worked Damn hard to build up the career I have and the 335d is the one thing that makes me feel like it's worth the hours sometimes.

29 - and I've my own house!
I did have to get rid of a nice E46 330 Sport when I bought this place and run about in a shit car for a year. Worth it, though. |

38 and had my 335D MSport (brand new when bought) for a couple of years due to the torque and long range economy. Fully paid including 14% discount when I collected it (as with all my cars, as I like to own them day 1).
Generally I buy a new car every year but this time, I am yet to like the F30 or even F10 (as a larger vehicle).

There was the thread before about how much you earn in relation to what you car costs you and there was lots at huge percentages. So much so after the car was paid there wasn't enough to pay for even a basic flat let alone cover the costs if running a house. We still see posts on here about cars registeted or insured under parents name as well. It isn't uncommon for young skilled guys to be earning good money. I see it every day through the oil industry with many young guys earning figures that allow them to buy very nice cars. I've no doubt there is quite a few younger 20 year olds on here all earning enough to pay for a 335 without any issues. However based on previous posts and threads I think there will be a high percentage that will have to sacrafice the car once they have houses, kids and have to stand on their own feet. |

40, had it 4 years from new.
Ha LOL - us oldies need to think back a bit...... I remember when I was 18 (1990) I had a MK1 Astra GTE. Everyone though I was some sort of drug dealer or something, although it was all paid for with loads of overtime and working away. Same again with the 309GTI (with installed mobile phone no less, in 1994), young ladies mothers warning them off me as "I must be dodgy" Then by 24 I had a mint 3yr old Smokestone Blue 4x4 Sapphire Cossy (much more of a special motor then than a 335i is now IMO, no offence) - And had my own house too - again all sorts of comments about mummy's boy / theif / robber etc..... Nice to see things never change Last edited by doughboy; 04-08-2013 at 08:31 AM.. |

32 bought it 18 months ago.
This whole thing about how to afford it is irrelavent as the question is how old are you not do you have a mountain of finance, loan, rich parents etc..? You could start another thread saying who do you owe your car to? BMW, bank, parents, lease company...? might not get so many honest answers though. |

Im 23 and am a young driver who baught my 335 without the help of parents or a loan.
My beleif for myself is dont buy it if you dont have the money and i would never take a loan or buy anything on finance, except for a mortage on my home. |

Well, my car is on finance. Why not. If I find I'm tight I just sell it and settle the finance. I lose 7% per year to the finance but didn't have £28k in the bank! It's only £30 per month or so in interest that it paid when it comes down to it ..

We may have opened a can of worms here but regardless of who you owe the car to you only owe yourself and maybe the missus (if applicable) an explination.

£30 a month interest? How much finance did you take, and how long? |

Those youngsters with nice cars, good luck to you. You are living the dream in your 20's.
Don't get paranoid about what us over 40's think, we're only jealous! I recently had a 20 something y.o. tyre fitter ask me what an old man (I'm 46) wants with a fast car? I told him that I had it because my mobility scooter was in the menders, after I spilled my Horlicks over it. |

I'm a little lost with the maths too though. HP agreements are very top heaving with interest. At a rough guess you will be currently paying about £250 per month interest and if you keep the car for 5 years you will be around £85 per month in interest on average. I think you bought your car long enough ago that values have improved a bit which will help. However on a HP agreement you've not eaten too much into the loan amount and been paying lots of the interest first. Last edited by Kerr; 04-08-2013 at 12:17 PM.. |
