After the sun went down last night, I decided to finish off the wine and stay out back and enjoy the first evening of the summer season. Of course there is way more light pollution here than in Yosemite, but it was a nice clear evening, soI brought the tripod out back and enjoyed some Floyd on the stereo, some Napa sangiovese, and tethered the 5DIII to my macbook.

Wild Feathers by dcstep, on Flickr

To you fellow photography geeks, this one's of added interest because it was taken at ISO 3200 because of low light. It had a good bit of both Chrominance and Luminance noise, so I turned on DxO's PRIME noise reduction module. I increased Micro Contrast ("Clarity" in LR) and lower the percentage of applications from 100% to 80%, to preserve feather details. (The default setting is too strong and smooths out details). PRIME does a pixel-by-pixel comparison that takes five to seven minutes per image.

5D MkIII, with 500/f4 and 2.0X TC-III, hand held.

Very nice Dave. I've been pretty happy with the Nik plug in for noise control, but ever since Google bought them, they stopped upgrading their suite. I may eventually have to move on.

Is that a woodpecker of some kind?

Thanks Ed. That's a belted kingfisher male, right after he dove in the water.

I don't know how they do it, looks awfully warm there. Maybe they should go to Illinois?

Nice shots today.

Weebl is that 3 kitties? I can't really tell.

Remmib, your shots make me want to visit Norway again. I haven't been there in 25 years.

Mark, neat catch on the bubbles. I like the color in the bubbles and the shadow.

There are 4 and that black one is going to be really fluffy. It may have a perm also.
