It won't be me, either.

Different route. Less ambitious timetable. I'll sleep better at night just leaving it at that.

In fact, here's a good disclaimer... Posted speed limits are to be obeyed at all times and at no time will anyone involved knowingly disobey traffic-control or other warning signs.

Look me up when you hit the West Coast. We'll have a cold beer ready for you when you get here

You know, if you've spent much time a little further south... like, say, I-8 approaching San Diego (my finish point), I might hit you up for some advice about local traffic patterns through town. I'm tweaking the drive plan to avoid traffic bottlenecks en route, and the last thing I want is to hit San Diego at rush hour and get mired in gridlock!

BTW, trip must end with foot in Pacific Ocean - in vicinity of the I-8 terminus, near Sunset Cliffs Blvd and Ocean Beach Park. That said, I'm looking for easiest access from Interstate to parking lot to salt water.

MatthewDFW,

I am not too sure about the San Diego area. The 8 does prett much send you right @ the Pacific. It will let you off into an area called Ocean Beach, a pretty hip part San Diego. Once the freeway ends, continue for a bout half a mile, then turn right @ West Point Loma Blvd. Continue on that road, and follow it to a parking lot that is right on the water.

We are headed to San Diego for thanksgiving holiday, we can do a little scouting for you , if you need.

Thanks! Your info jives with what I have here, although I had no clue that Ocean Beach is nice... I simply don't know the S.D. area well, and didn't want to roll into a bad part of town at the tail end of the drive. The actual end-point of the c2c drive will be at something called "Dog Beach" (public beach on Pacific Ocean), off Voltaire Street, and not too far from West Point Loma Blvd.

My scheduling avoids bottlenecks in the few large metro areas along the way by passing through overnight or in wee hours of morning. But... by the time we get as far as AZ/CA state line, there's a fair chance the timetable could be in the crapper. Avoiding traffic jams in San Diego may end up being a matter of luck.

Yeah man, we take our dog there. It is the only off leash dog beach in southern california. Well, legal one anyways. So the g/f and I take the poochy down there, hang out for a day, grab some burgers @ Hodad's (which is AWESOME), then head back to LA LA land.

Sure hope your trip happens before mid-january, then I could meet ya on down there. My next project doesn't start 'til then.

It is curious, in the short time since actual sleep was added to the list of options, sleep has raced to tie. Take care of yourself, and, by extension, others.

Get some sleep.

I recomend sleeping if/when you hit traffic, it might not actually slow you down that much, plus you get a nap.

The co-driver changes the whole thing. As long as the driver is not sleep deprived there is little chance of that causing an accident.

Remember people, it's not just your own life, it's all the other drivers, and the Pedestrians. Personally if someone was proven to be sleep deprived, and hit someone, I think they should go to jail! I see no difference of getting drunk and getting in a car.

EspressoBoy

A little clip about this...

I disagree that coffee, rolling down windows, etc work as a long term measure. It will help but nothing is better than getting sleep. NOTHING. If two people are talking and nobody is sleeping that can work, but if you are tired and a deer or even a drunk driver wanders into the road, you are in trouble. So from a planning stage of going across USA, plan sleep. If the driver is wide awake, you have no chance of falling asleep. My suggestion is to bring stuff for the other driver to get a good sleep... pillow, blankets, ear plugs, eye shaded, etc.

Oh if you see Yoda, you are sleep driving! Cause he is here with me 24/7!
