To the person who's having trouble keeping ice cubes around, let this become an opportunity to drink your whisk(e)y neat. |

I have been drinking Yamazaki forever, mostly the 12 it's very good and an exceptional value. Drank the 25 with a bartender friend for my birthday a few years ago it was amazing but $$$$$ and difficult to find. Hakushu is also very good. For the most part, at their respective price points, Japanese whiskeys are excellent options. They're also starting to show up at a lot more places and gaining in popularity.

Here's a pretty good writeup / tasting notes on the Yamazaki 12. If you can ever get your hands on the 25 drink as much as you can. It's life changing, but at $300 a glass (best guess) not to be trifled with as a daily drinker.

For Scotch, I've got Glenlivet 12 on hand. For bourbon whiskey, I have Eagle Rare 10, Stranahan's, and Breckenridge Whiskey. I'll have to give the Yamazaki a try sometime.

Corsair also has a number of great options, and the bottles look bad ass on your bar.

Jilkikswine on twitter is a good follow on this topic. Spirits buyer in Chicago and friend of mine, just got back from a month in Tokyo researching whiskey, sake etc.

He speaks English, she speaks German fluently and I understand it and speak a little. Problem is he's a spoiled fawk and does not care about anyone else. We are so over him it's not funny he's been here with us since last July.

Oy. A spoiled teenager that you can't smack upside his head. That must be the pits. If you get to make his airline reservations for his trip home, stick him in a lousy seat at the back of the plane.

I'm a big fan of Edradour, and they are always putting out limited runs of different cask types. Had the cask strength port finish in Scotland a few years ago and fell in love with the brand.

I enjoy the smokier/peatier flavors. Aberlour A'bunadh is my favorite splurge. For daily driving, the Kirkland label isn't all that bad. I got a bottle of Glenlivet 12 for my b-day and I can sorta get thru that.

Sherry.
I just started getting into scotch last year and I've only tried glenlivet 18, have a bottle of Macallan 12 and balvenie 12. The balvenie is my favorite. Any other suggestions as to what else I should try? |

It's there a certain age when you can actually appreciate scotch? I'm asking because I've tried quite a bit but still can't really say I enjoy it as much as beer or wine. I'm 31 btw

You need to develop your palette but it's like anything else, they are all different. I'd suggest finding a good whiskey bar with a knowledgable staff and try a few things. If you can tell them what you do or don't like about a specific whiskey, or at least say I prefer bottle A to bottle B, they can help you figure out what you like.

I'm a beer and wine drinker, too. But whiskey is good when I want just one drink for the evening, like during the week.

So apparently we can talk about liquor but not firearms. So what is the cut-off for scotch? I've had and 18 and i"ve seen 25's. Does scotch get sketchy after x amount of years?

Varies on your likings....
The four things to look for are color, nose, palate, and finish
