Back to UV filters, it's not the article that I recalled, but www.photo.net (you have to register to see it) compares several filters, including some generics, and finds several of them totally useless for filtering UV. Tiffen and Hoya were the tops in the comparison.

I got my B+W UV and CPL filters from hvstar.net...which while it comes from hong kong..they are legit real B+W filters (I checked)...and youll find them about ~50% cheaper than anywhere else (but itll take 1 week to arrive once you order)
link below for the B+W XS-PRO slim MRC UV filter 77m & B+W slim 77mm Kaesemann MRC CPL...for only $203.90 + free shipping (pretty much...as cheap as youll ever find) http://maxsaver.net/B-W-Filter-Kit-X...-CPL-77mm.aspx

WOW.... Eastbay (sports clothes/shoes store if you've never heard of it) offers 25% back on bing.com.... next week it'll be 50%!!!!!!!!!!!
gonna get me a new pair of Jordans! Anyway, so let me ask, what is a GOOD deal on a lightly used f4 IS and 2.8 IS respectively? I was thinking if I can get an F4 IS for $850 or so I'd do that. Or if I found a 2.8 IS for under $1300 I'd consider that? What do you guys think about that? Realistic for stuff in good condition or not? |

I'm sure most of the used ones should be fine.. but there could be things that you cannot see buying a used lens. (I'm not talking about scratches, or anything), but for IS version lens, you never know if there is something wrong with the IS or autofocus or anything for that matter.. but an FYI, sometimes stores on ebay sell the f2.8 IS for around $1450 - $1490free shipping.. and together with 8% cashback.. you're looking at just over $1300 for a BRAND new f2.8 IS!!

Also keep in mind that there is a percent limit for the bing double cash back. I don't remember what it is, too lazy to search. |

well I purchased the new lens....
$1025 for a new 70-200 f/4 IS + free shipping + 10% bing cashback ($102.50) so I think I got a good deal. Adorama had a 2.8 IS on there for $1500 but they took it down right before the bing cashback went up and make a new auction for it with a higher price of like $1650. |

the f4L IS is REALLY sharp. I know I love mine and you wont regret it a bit. 50mm f1.4 is also very solidly built and the image quality, while not as great/crisp and autofocus not as fast as the f1.2L, it is an excellent performing lens! (and of course, it cost only 1/3 of the price of the f1.2L, which I think is way too much for even an semi-amateur photographer). The next glass you should consider down the road is the 35mm f1.4L <--- just an excellent excellent prime lens.

yeah it is a nice lens but as long as I have my 16-35mm 2.8 I think thats fine for me.
Might look into a 300mm prime though... |

I've got the 400mm f5.6L and I'm jonesing bad for the 500 f4L IS, but that's mega-bucks. I use my 400 plus a 1.4TC for birds and wildlife. Even with that reach I need to do some serious cropping with the typical file size down to 30% to 50% of what I started with. The 300mm can work at the zoo, but in the wild it's pretty limiting. Oh, I'm ahead of myself, maybe you've got a use that fits the 300mm profile better than what I'm thinking. BTW, at my Flickr site (link below) the "Waterbirds" set is all with either the 400 or the 400 plus 1.4TC. Look at the EXIF to see which. Most of those are at or around dawn, so the ISOs are typically 2500 to 3200, so I'm pushing the limits of all my equipment. Dave

If you're on one of the baselines, not too many rows back you can get good shots of the pitchers, batters and infielders. The opposite field and center field will be tough, requiring a lot of cropping. Still, it'd work. Put the EF 400mm f5.6L into your consideration because it's very sharp, but lacks IS. There's also a 100-400 f4 to 6.5 IS that's worth considering, but both the 300 and 400 primes will be sharper. Generally you'll have good light, so shutter speeds can stay pretty high even at 5.6 and ISOs around 800.

bing.com is a crock of shit... I ordered all that stuff at 10% off and now they're offering 12%. This is ass backwards, they shoulda started at 16% and worked their way back down to 8%.
