N54 belt shredded. Is my motor cooked???

Hi everyone, was taking my mom to the movies for mothers day when i heard a noise like i was dragging something. Pulled over immediately and Popped the hood and the belt had been shredded in 2 spots, but was still on the pulleys. I immediately crapped myself and cut the belt off. Towed the car to my mechanic where i got it on jacks and inspected the crank pulley. I couldnt see a single piece of rubber anywhere pinched behind it. He looked and said the same thing. I think i caught it in time before the belt got caught in the crank pulley. What do you all think?

Thats what the belt looked like after removing it

Seems you caught it just in time.

I'd be more concerned as to why the belt shreded like that.

Did you check if your power sterring pulley came in contact with the subframe?
Was your oil filter housing leaking oil and dripping on the belt causing it to deteriorate?

Not addressing the root cause will cause it to happen again.

remove the crank pulley and check if the seal is OK.

Checked power steering no play and the subframe had no contact marks. Notor mounts are fairly new. Ofhg is also fairly new and wasnt leaking. However one of my idler pulleys has play in it that no other pulley has. Gonna replace pulleys.

mine shredded few weeks ago.

no apparent reason, no leak, no issue with the pulleys.

I had a belt guard , so I safely drove back home knowing the engine ''shouldn't'' eat it. and in deed everything was fine.

I change all the pulleys and they were all fine visually. they were all changed about 10k km ago, so fairly new. Maybe a weaked tensioner or a sudden load on the alternator, a/c ? who knows.

Got a new continental kit. So far so good.

Did you need to do any modifications to the plate, or was it a literal plug and play.

Also, cant see pic.

plug and play. easy when the belt is already out. the bolts on the pulley were easy to unbolt, BMW torque spec are low , and imo a bit too low for a moving parts (added blue loctite)

Then the plate slide in, 2 screw provided. Need to be centered to avoid having scratching sound on the crank shaft.

i use flicker to share pics, seems to work for the others, since they comments on my pics ive posted in other threads. maybe your vpn, firewall, est?

Damn 15$ I should have tried a no name one. I got the Malo one but still worth it for the price I guess instead of changing every single belt component as preventive and even then have some random reason to make it shred...

metal billet stuff are copied or maybe even from generic china supplier.

if you check catchcan, chargepipe, belt gard, pcv, and few other item are identical to major supplier. Only difference is the stamp on it.
and I dont mind when the price is 20% , higher but we speak around 200-300%... catch can was 60$ cad, and BMS one 245$ cad + shipping + customs + taxes, so around 310$ cad.

this is nuts, and it's exactly the same.

For some reason i see your pic now.

That was a nice save. Did you notice if the plate warped after the belt incident?

yes a tiny bit, like 1mm gap from the block, but can't tell if it was there before, you dont look at this stuff when its new.

And my belt shredded around 20km AFTER ive installed this guard, what are the odds...
