I have two sport modes on my 335is but can't tell what the difference is. Can anyone explain?

The sports button enables the "Driving Dynamics Control or DDC", the difference is minimal... (quicker shifts, holds gears a tiny bit longer, and slightly better throttle response).

Putting the gear left to S enables the "Sports program". Still automatic shifting, but gears are held much longer and in their optimal range, shifts happen faster, and automatically downshift early and often as needed.

Move the gear left, then up/down to engage in full manual mode.

Combine DDC and the Sports/Manual to get the best out of the transmission.

Sounds like both options do the same thing.

In my experience, you have to press the sport button to get the faster shifts. Being in the sports program is insufficient.

Aye, totally agree.

I prefer being in full manual with DDC. (that or with everything off and in vanilla-D for highway cruising, best mpg).

There is Automatic, M manual, and S sport.

When you move to M/S you start in the S mode which is still automatic. Once you move the gear selector or paddles up or down, your in M manual mode.

The sport button think of it as turbo mode from the old PC days when they had a turbo button, it overclocked the CPU a bit. This is what the sport button does. In fact the DCT transmission lists these modes: automatic, manual, sport, and super-sport. The sport button really puts the engine software in a performance mode for fast shift responses along with the transmission for faster gear shifts.

You get the 7 sec overboost by using launch control.

Op, in addition to what has been stated above, you need to use the sport button to use the 7 second overboost function i.e dtc off, move gear selector to the left as shown in the pic, put the car in manual mode, engage the sport button, depress the brake and push the gas pedal until the checkered flag is shown and hold on for dear life
Maybe the OP should break out his manual.

I can't wait to play; awaiting delivery.

It is my understanding that the overboost feature works at full throttle, regardless of your transmission choice or sport mode. If you simply stomp your foot in the DCT to pass you'll have 7 seconds just as if you drop the hammer from 5th to 2nd gear in the manual. You do not need to have the DCT or have it in sport mode.

Thoughts?

HOOOOOLY bad information in this thread.

D mode is normal granny mode with auto shifting and slow yet smooth clutch engagement. Normal throttle response .

Knock the lever to the left and you are in S mode. sharpened throttle response and quicker shifts up and down the gears as well as longer gear holds. You will burn more gas due to the generally higher revs that are being held. Shifting is still done by computer at this point of course.

While shifter is left of D, if you tap the lever or pull either paddle, you are in what displays as M mode. The engine software input remains the same as if you were in S mode, however you control the shifting now. You do this with paddles or lever. Your choice. It is no faster or quicker shifting than S mode.

If you press the sport BUTTON it will engage a 7 second overboost function that will allow the turbos to run up to around 14.8 psi during overtaking moves on the highway. Also read, but not confirmed that the overboost is available on launch control. Regardless, the sport button engages an even quicker shifting program.

^ I can't find the source but I do remember that it was from a pdf in some BMW spec sheet. It mentioned that under normal boost, max psi would be 11.X while overboost was 14.X. I think the other N54 engines run 8.9 or something around there. The 7 seconds thing is published in many print and internet sources.

connection \ requirement ?

I am looking for a source that specifies a connection
between the sport button and availability of the overboost...
Or any requirement that anything besides flooring the throttle
is required to access 7 seconds of overboost???
Thanks,
- Ray

There are a couple of pages dedicated to this in the manual. Pressing the sport button yields minimal difference for me... Left shift into S program AND pressing the sport button gives you very aggressive shifting and throttle response.

I haven't tested mine extensively, but from personal experience pressing the SPORT button yields sharper and more immediate throttle response. Moving the gear selector to the M/S settings makes gear changes faster and also holds the gears longer. Using both the M/S gear selector and the SPORT button gives me more immediate feedback and quicker -/+ gear shifts.

I want to revive this topic for another question. Anyone knows how to remove that sport button from the trim? I unscrewed tiny screws but it doesn't come off. I don't want to pull to much, cos it may break.
