Try going right when they open or an hour before they close. Going right after work is brutal. I went to Golds for years - they are good gyms. More strength-training oriented than cardio. When I went to cancel (I was month-to-month; no contract), I had to do it during business hours with their corporate HQ - couldn't do anything locally.

I signed up for a 1-year at Boston Sports Club to avoid a massive start-up fee and they got rid of a ton of equipment to make room for a CrossFit area (that nobody uses). I'm just toughing it out until September; will definitely take advantage of a free trial next time.

Find out what the cancelation fee is - you might have to eat it. Better to get out now and find a better gym than to pay monthly and not use it.
