I agree on the 20% across the board reasoning and it's why I do it as well - it's easy math and for the most part, the difference is not much. Unfortunately (for them), I usually will not tip more if the service is excellent. But I will tip less if it wasn't. They are also subject to how easy it is for me to tip them. For example, we ordered a pizza the other day and because I had no small bills, the delivery guy got an $8 tip, where normally it would be half that. On the flip side, had I only had enough for a $2 tip, he probably would have gotten that instead.

One thing I try and do is give the tip to the waiter/waitress directly and not leave it on the table. I've heard of bus boys pocketing most of the tip for themselves and that's just not cool.


As far as excessive tipping, I find it funny/annoying that the serve-yourself frozen yogurt chains have a tip jar!
