If you are talking reliability, I don't think lowly Hyundai is at the heels of BMW and Audi. They are out front taking the lead, and BMW and Audi are jerking around and not fixing their same chronic issues that appear in the same models year after year.

With that said, if you are talking about luxury, performance, road feel, etc, I don't think Hyundai really wants to match BMW or Audi. They just want to produce inexpensive cars that are "good enough" for folks who aren't hard core into cars. They don't want to put out the best cars. Their goal is to put out cars that are good enough, but not too good that the price gets jacked through the roof.
