It is characterized by anxiety-provoking thoughts, images, or ideas (obsessions) and/or ritualistic behaviors such as counting, repeated checking, or handwashing (compulsions). People with OCD engage in compulsive behaviors to try to rid themselves of disturbing obsessive thoughts.
