Yes, the map data is what is updated. iDrive functionality and features are not updated with this product.
Navigation map updates are not covered by BMW factory warranty, unfortunately. BMW does offer a map data update annually, so the choice is yours. It may not be necessary to update every year, but the option is availalble if needed.
