The lith doesn't completely extirpate the stones - they'd still be painful to pass through but at least they're not able to pass. Lith usually reserved for kidney stones that are perniciously too big.

Even if they are passable... why wouldn't they just make them as small as possible? I've heard of people passing stones that are so small they have to filter their urine to make sure they did in fact pass them. That sounds awesome... extreme pain and pissing blood sounds not awesome.
