Hate to rain on your little parade but HOW you measure it is irrelevant. Taxes are higher across the pond. Doesn't matter if you pay by litre, gallon or spoonfull. This is just ignorance. No, not even. Basic education.
I for one think the high prices are good. Not only will it get people to drive less, reducing congestion for ME, but will cause people to use less oil in the long run, reducing the negative environmental externalities burning those fuels causes.
I would whole-heartedly support a price floor of $4/gallon in the US. If the actual price dips below, a tax is automatically applied to keep the price at $4 or above. It seems that price is the only way that Americans can be convinced to conserve. "Doing good" isn't enough. Mandating fuel efficiency (Read: CAFE) is not enough.
