I've been reading some posts about updating software and also updating the system. Is there any difference between updating the "software" vs the "system"?

I drove a 2009 328ic a few months back that was equipped with I-Drive, but I see other series that appear to have different interfaces/user-experiences/GUIs. I guess my question is, when you look at the two images below, is it possible for someone who has the old "graphics" to update their software to look like the new version? Or would you have to buy complete new I-Drive Hardware and replace the existing I-Drive system?
