Try to get your hands on a Macallan select oak. Its not expensive and may in fact be sold widely in the States, but the only place I can get it here is when I'm traveling and thus I find it in the duty free store.
I would think that it may not be as sweet as a Balvenie (though I haven't had one in a while), but I think it is sweeter than the 12 (though I do really quite love the 12).
I think you may enjoy the Select Oak as well...just a nice balance, good everyday drinking scotch. Should be about $55 for 1L in the duty free...may even find it for less somewhere else.
When I'm down in Mexico in December I intend on picking up some more.
