I recommend Vail - Im there each March. The great thing with ski school is that after lessons are over they don't enforce you using their lift ticket to get on the mountain. I believe a 3 day school was about $400, compared to 3 days of lift tickets at $450 ($150/day). Rentals can be had for less than $50/day. Shop around Vail village for best results. The only thing would be housing (not sure if this is included in your $1k) and getting to Vail (Colorado mountain express I think is 30 each way per person).

I've also found I never ski 5 consecutive days - it's quite the workout at that elevation. I've only been to killington once and it was too icy for me - i snowboard.
