Make sure to dry everything well as you don't want to create mold and horrible smells later on.

The smells and mold is what I'm worried about also. Would a steam cleaner work better or just the same than the vinegar? I bought myself some carpet cleaner and planned on doing this soon using the spray and brush and vacuum method. Do you think that will work effectively?
It's been a tough winter in Toronto.
