This. By not having the IBS in the charging circuit, you may as well not have it all. If the IBS doesn't 'see' the charge from the ctek, it'll assume the battery is still in whatever state it was before you charged it and try and cram some more in when you next run the car.

To be clear, you don't *have* to connect to the charging posts under the bonnet/hood, but it's a simple way to be sure that the IBS is in the charging circuit.

In response to the original question, it shouldn't matter at all which you disconnect first, and you shouldn't need to disconnect the battery beforehand - just make sure any loose positive wires can't short out on the body/block/etc.
