You need to develop your palette but it's like anything else, they are all different. I'd suggest finding a good whiskey bar with a knowledgable staff and try a few things. If you can tell them what you do or don't like about a specific whiskey, or at least say I prefer bottle A to bottle B, they can help you figure out what you like.
