Mainly because they're more fuel efficient (on the other hand 1L of diesel produces more CO2 than 1L of petrol, but the fuel efficiency more than makes up for it)

Yep, energy density is higher for oil-burners, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to push it, since demand will go up and price will go up accordingly, then gasoline becomes dirt cheap because it exists in excess.
