In NZ we went with "Carless Days" so you would have a sticker on your car with "Wednesday" on it meaning you couldn't use it on Wednesdays. You for the most part got to pick your day, so workers who needed their car could choose a weekend day. I remember being sick on our carless day and my mother was worried about driving me to the doctor and getting a ticket.
And the local newspaper ran a comic strip called "Carlos Daiz" which was penned by my Dad's graphic artist from his printing factory.
