Actually they can but the device which helps you to clone the key is 10 times expensive than cloning kit for 07-2011 cars.
So being a 2012 decreases the chances of it being nicked 'technically' however being M3 and 2012 puts it to 'highly desirable cars' category.
My recommendations:
1- Dislock
2- Viper alarm for the peace of mind
If you do not have instant funds to go for number two then relocate the obd which is MUST on e-series.

Brilliant, thanks for the explanation - quite why BMW customer service won't acknowledge it is beyond me (legal reasons and leaving themselves open for a huge lawsuit I'm guessing...).
I may go for the Viper anyway; the Disklok I may pick up later (gutted I missed the 30% off deal in November last year
) but the chances are it'll be the one time I don't bother fitting it that the car would get pinched.
Already ordered another OBD2 port to put in place of the standard one, just need to order the extension for the original
