Dota's concept was good and it was of course popular when it was the only game in the genre. Was it balanced? Of course not. But it was a mod.
Now earlier when I said "no one was lining up to play dota", I was speaking in relative terms.
How many concurrent users do you think the dota mod has?
We know how much Dota 2 has. It's peaked somewhere in the 650k region. Meanwhile, League is hitting 7.5 million.
There's are reasons to play the original dota that have nothing to do with quality. Someone else asked the same question:

This, it's easier to follow the tried and true method of pirating WC3 then fucking around with steam cafe accounts for dota2, I know by experience.
Got it working anyway.
