Like mentioned before, alot of it also originated from the drift scene.

Its a huge debate even on drift forums but alot of the pros will run stretched tires to stiffen sidewall. (although some will argue you can fix that issue with tire pressure)

From the drifters point of view: its for cheaper tires, using used tires they use what they can get, "stiffer side wall", and for looks while being able to perform (because drifting is based on style).

From a regular DD point of view: its to fit wide tires under the fenders. I've done it before, but recently went more with performance as I've picked up doing some track days but I still respect the look. Its DEFINITELY popular in the younger crowd and is a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" sort of thing..

Also, having a car lowered and wider wheels makes it more "aggresive".
